General anesthetic
Hi all, this is a duplication of a question I've asked so apologies for that but require a fairly quick answer.
Zeus went through some treatment yesterday through general anesthetic.. when we brought him back last night and throughout the whole night, he's been shaking/twitching, whining constantly (very loud too), he won't eat, won't drink and is just lying in the same position, hasnt moved much.
Is this normal? How long is this to last?

Re: General anesthetic
They dont sound like common side effects. theyre normally just very sleepy and thirsty and can take a a couple of days for the effect to compleatly ware off. I would ring the vets asap to keep them updated, they may want to see him!

Re: General anesthetic
Don't forget he's had a tube down his throat etc. so it will be sore, sounds like he may have come home a little early as dogs coming out od these procedures do these sorts of things because they're disorientated and not sure quite where they are yet. Once he eats and drinks and does his business he'll pass the chemicals out of his system and be back to his usual self. Have a word with the vet and tell them his symptoms etc. and see what they think. I've worked in a vets practice and experienced these reactions and I've also experienced general anaesthetic and its after symptoms, my first visitor's words were, "Looks like he's been in the wars". Thanks!
Re: General anesthetic
Hi all, apologies for the delay, I've been having issues with my internet!
So, last week was pretty tough.. after Zeus went through the general.. he had a rough 3/4 days.. according to the vet, he had some sort of allergic reaction to it. He didn't eat for almost 3 days.. he didn't drink water at all for around 2 days.. he was constantly twitching/shaking for the whole week, constantly whining and looked to be in alot of pain (especially with a sore tummy).
We went back on the Wednesday so the vet could give him some sort of painkiller to calm him down.. that didn't really work.. on Thursday we took him back again to give him something to handle the stomach ache/diarrhoea etc and that eventually calmed him down.
Long story short.. he now seems to be getting better.. he's been eating properly since Saturday and he's actually wanting to play ball, instead of lying down in one position and not moving all day!
He's on antibiotics for a week to combat his ear infection and we're going back for a follow up appointment tomorrow to make sure everythings ok.. almost £500 in and things are starting to look better!
Thanks for the concern

Re: General anesthetic
Poor Zeus, sounds like he must have had a really rough time of it and
you must have been worried out of your mind. So glad he is on the
mend.
It might be worth asking the Vet which drugs he used so that you
can make a note of them. Then if in the future Zeus is unfortunate
enough to need another general you can ask for an alternative to be
used.
Hope all goes well with the follow up tomorrow - get well soon Zeus.
