at vets to be spayed but shes just come into season!
Hi, dropped misty at vets to be spayed this am, but vet just rang to say when getting her out of kennel they noticed blood spots and she's in season already what to do now? We have to wait 3 months before re-booking, but how do I take care of her now and how long is
she going to be in season? Any help appreciated x

Re: at vets to be spayed but shes just come into season!
yes as your vet said it will be 3 months before she can have it done, she will be in season roughly around 21 days,as its her first one it could be a bit shorter or a bit longer. She will bleed for the first 2 weeks and then it will go to a redish straw like colour, when it turns this colour she will be at her most vunerable to mate and must not come in to contact with a male, some people lead walk their dogs when in season and some to chose not to walk them at all,it depends on the owner,i chose not to take sash out or if we did it was early morning when there was less chance of many dogs out, male dogs will smell her and try and do their hardest to get to her!she may be a little unsettled and not eat much the first few days, perfectly normal for them to take to their beds.you can get doggie knickers for them to wear from your pet shop, hope this helps.

Stella's covered it all above. That was some unfortunate timing for you though.

Thanks for the great advice, it was very unfortunate timing, we were only at vet tues evening for pre-check up and she was fine. She was a little unsettled last night, kept jumping up and wandering around but she has cried on and off all afternoon and evening today. They did give her a pre-med at the vet but that should have worn off now. It's not nice when she's obviously distressed. :-(

Re: at vets to be spayed but shes just come into season!
Personally I think you've been lucky. With us having our first bitch I researched as much as I could about their seasons.
It seems the most popular concensus is to allow them to have at least one season. A couple of reasons are hormonal and incontinence.
You can buy pants and pads for them but Theia wasn't too keen on them! We only used them when we had visitors. She wasn't bad at all really and did a great job of keeping herself clean but have cloths and cleaners at the ready!
Pete.

Oh dear yes bad timing, but I have always been led to believe best to let them have one season too
