Hello!
Hi All,
My first post on the forum! I've referred to this great website before but now have a specific question and am hoping for some help.
I have a 9 month old intact male staffy who is just the best guy! He has been highly socialized, been to puppy day care and interacts well with all dogs so far. That said, in the last two months he has become very vocal and aggressive with puppies. I am aware that many dogs do not appreciate puppies and also know that a certain amount of older dogs telling younger dogs is a good thing but this is not the good kind. He becomes very vocal and scares the puppy and owners and me. He postures over them and I cant quite tell if he plans to really hurt them as I obviously remove him from the situation.
I've read that as he is becoming an adolescent dog, he may be targeting puppies as easy prey but it is not okay. Does anyone have experience with this? Is it something that will pass as he grows and matures?
Ideally I would like to wait until he is 18 months to neuter him..... but could doing it at a year help?
Best,
Anna

Re: Hello!
Hi & Welcome from Flo and me
My Flo has done this sort of thing and she is a middle aged girl so I'm not sure the neuter route is the answer to be honest. To manage this sort of situation we use a distraction method (her stick) which works every time. It does of course mean that we always have to look ahead for potential issues so that we can avoid them and where they do happen we are always ready to whip her out of the situation.
I'm sure others will have better advise than my own meandering experience so do check back here

Re: Hello!
Hi and welcome from Oz and me, sorry I can't help you as Oz was rescued as has other dog issues but we use Ian's method in a situation. Oz carries a stick at all times on a walk well it's more like a log but it definitely distracts him

Re: Hello!
Honestly sounds natural to me. He could also be picking up on the fact that you are nervous. Here is a link on body language that should help you determine if it is actual aggression
