Introduction, new pup and travel tips
Just wanted to say hi. I’ve been following the forum for a little while now trying to pick up as many tips as I can. I don’t actually pick my boy puppy up until next Sunday (21st Dec) when he will be a little over 8 weeks old. Hopefully a picture of him is in my Avatar.
Unfortunately we have a long trip ahead of us, from Plymouth up to Durham, around 360 miles. My daughter is coming down with me to help with the collection and we have kitted ourselves out with toys, blankets, a vet mat and lots of kitchen paper
Any tips on transporting a pup this distance would be greatly appreciated.
Brian

Re: Introduction, new pup and travel tips
Here is a link that may help. You should also let the breeder know about the long trip and see if they will get the pup used to being in a car. We had a 3-4 hour drive to get Suki and I sat in the back with her the whole way. Make sure to pull over often so the pup can use the toilet and also make sure to have food and water.

Re: Introduction, new pup and travel tips
Thanks.
I’ve been reading some more on long distance car travel with a Staffy pup, seems keeping him wrapped in a blanket and on your lap is as good as anything. A ginger biscuit is also recommended if the pup starts feeling car sick, maybe I’ll buy a big packet and have a couple myself
I do hope he takes to it OK, I’ve booked him into Butlins in June with my granddaughters and I get around Europe a few times a year in a sport I’m involved with, would hate to have to leave him behind. We’ve had a Staffy in the family for 13 years now and he’s not good in a car. To be fair he’s never spent much time in one.
Regards stopping often (not a problem), do we feed him as normal and give him a walk around the service station, some advice says otherwise as he’s presently only had his first injection???

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me
Adaptil spray is great for calming dogs which may be helpful during your journey, also plenty of toilet breaks:

Re: Introduction, new pup and travel tips
Hi, we had to travel from Hull back to Sunderland, thankfully not as far as you . We got to the breeders just after they were fed and stayed about an hour and a half until she'd toileted, burned off some energy and as soon as she settled down grabbed her mams blanket and we were off! Luckily she slept all the way home.
One thing we did was to clear the boot of the car and put some puppy pads down in case she woke and we could have let her go there. A pad on the knee too to be on the safe side ( IMO then get rid of the pads).
Also try not to have the car too warm, I know it's horrible in a cool car in December, you'll just have to wear an extra jumper

Spot on Pete, kept the car cool and he slept pretty much all the way home (6 1/2 hours including two stops), so no worries.
He seems to be settling in pretty well
