Kauto's first couple of nights
Hi all. Well we picked him up Sunday and he's been good as gold really. Few little accidents around the house (just wee's though, all poo's have been outside). We expected him to cry on his first night and boy did he cry lol. Tried a hot water bottle wrapped up, he's got mums scented blanket too and also left a radio on for him. Had us up most of the night though and then he napped a lot throughout the day the little bugger. Play times great, he loves it and was a little star at the vets for his first jab.
Last night he had us up after an hour at 11 so we brought his crate upstairs in our room. He settled on my knee and then I popped him in his crate with one of my t shirts as well. Cried at 12, 2, 5 and 7. Last two I took him down for a wee. My fiancé is back at work today and I'm back tomorrow. Just hope he lets us have a good nights sleep tonight but we're also worried about him crying all day while we're at work. I normally do 12-8 and she's permanent 9-5 but I'm on 9-5 wednesday and Friday too.
I'm going to try putting him in his crate today and then leaving the room and come back in immediately and repeat a lot to get him used to us leaving.
Anybody got any other tips for leaving him and for bedtime? Think we're going to keep in our room at night for the foreseeable future.

Try and get someone to pop in for a wee play when you are both out. Bedtimes will get better when he holds his toilets in longer. Wee monkey will be wanting in bed with you i was weak and gave in so patience i suppose.

Re: Kauto's first couple of nights
We found that once we get home from work the rule is the pup's awake till we go to bed. You'll find a very young pup needs a minimum of around 16 hours sleep/chill per day. You choose when these hours are.
I personally would leave the pup when it cries over night. If you get it's feeding times consistent, you'll get a toilet routine sorted too, and make sure it does one or the other before you go to bed. Also I wouldn't put any of our clothes in the cage. If it chews your t shirt, your other clothes may be in danger!
I wouldn't move the cage either. The dog needs to learn it has to be separated from you sometimes.

Re: Kauto's first couple of nights
Thanks for all the advice. Think we're going to keep him awake until bedtime and hope he sleeps. He seems to hate the crate, cries every time even when I went for a shower. Feeding him tea in there so he knows good things happen in there and see what happens tonight.
Also, any recommendations on food? He's currently on puppy hero as that's what the breeder was giving him, biscuits in the morning and meat at night. We want to ween him off this slowly and I was thinking wainwrights?
He's always looking for his food bless him.

Re: Kauto's first couple of nights
try to make his crate a fun place for him to be in,put some toys in there and may be the odd treat, also you could try and cover the top and sides so its like a little den for him

Re: Kauto's first couple of nights
He doesn't like the crate one bit. I've fed him in there, covered it, toys and treats but all he wants is to be on the sofa with us. Doesn't go in there of his own accord. Should I keep it covered all the time or just at night? Everything else is going well apart from a few accidents, I just want him to love his crate.

Re: Kauto's first couple of nights
Think you'll need to experiment with the crate cover. They are all different and some just want to be able to keep an eye on the family whilst others are quiet happy to have their own space.
