about to adopt.
Hi all ,
We are a family who are about to adopt a beautiful SBT this weekend.I knew when I saw him he was the one for us. We have owned a dog before in the past (2 years ago) but not a SBT.
Questions I was wondering if anyone could help me with is ..
Our lovely boy is 2 years old and we would like him to be one of the family and let him have freedom of the house is there a way to do this without him becoming worried , to try 5mins at a time?
Also is it best to crate train for been out of the house for hour ? as there will be times occasionally I will have to leave him?
Do any dogs stay in car while anyone pops to the shops?
he has being castrated and we just want to help him settle.
hope you dont think questions are too strange.
Jo

Re: about to adopt.
Hi Ya Jo. welcome to the Forum from Flo and me
There are no daft questions so please just ask away and well done on the rescue
I rescued my girl and tried to keep her to one room to start with but she was having none of that and simply decided to jump the stair gates. In the end we let her settle wherever she wanted but not on our bed.
Crate training is fine but do you think you will need to ? I don't as my Flo dosen't chew anything. Very occassionaly I will leave my Flo in the car but not for longer than a couple of mins and obviously not when it's too hot or anything.

Re: about to adopt.
Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me
I would never leave my dog in the car on his own, not even for a minute.
We have a crate for Rocky which he goes in whenever he likes, the door is always left open for him. This did take some training though and for the first few months we used to close the door for him when we left him. We soon got used to leaving the door open though and he now just goes for a snooze on our bed when we have to both go out for a few hours during the day.

Re: about to adopt.
Hi from us, Jo, and lovely to hear you're taking a rescue
I personally don't worry about restricting space in the house, other than restricting any areas that you may intend to be off limits in the long term. We always allow our dogs to have a good snuffle round everywhere and feel comfortable with the whole house and garden, and it never seems to worry them at all.
Re the crate training, it might not be necessary. Crates can sometimes be stressful for rescues as they can carry a feeling of kennels again. Not all, but some. Rather than worrying about crate training, I'd give Donny a couple of days to settle, then start gradually training him to be left alone. Start with really, really short spells - literally just leave, wait a few seconds then come back in again, and don't make a fuss about either leaving or returning. Then build up to leaving for a minute, 5 minutes, etc. You might want to leave him with some treats scattered on the floor or something to create a positive association at the beginning.
I do leave mine in the car while I pop into a shop, but never if it's warm and I always lock the car. Dogs get stolen from unlocked cars. Again, though, teach him it's ok in short spells first.
Can't wait for pics!

Re: about to adopt.
Jo, here's a link to the Diet page:-
https://staffy-bull-terrier.niceboard.com/f29-staffordshire-bull-terrier-diet-nutrition
There is also a raw feed area there too. I feed my Flo 1/2 a Tin of Wainwrights per day topped up with Jameswellbeloved kibble & kibble only for breakfast. This seems to be just about right for her size.
I don't have Flo on the bed but only because it's like sleeping next to a steam train and she fidgets a lot But if you like a nice foot warmer, it might be worth having him with you.

I feed raw. We started for a couple of specific reasons but wouldn't now change, even though I'm veggie and hate handling raw meat!
And a dog sleeping on a bed ? Poor dog, should be IN bed! Bob always slept under the duvet, no matter how hot it was in the summer, and Chaos always starts there although he does sometimes emerge panting!

Hi all Donny arrived home later at about 6 pm . He adored the children and licked our youngest to death lol much to her delight she's 8 . He slept at the bottom or should I say about our bed and was a little confused as to where he was . Such a character . I took him out for walk about 7.30pm last night and he does pull like a train for first 15 mins all very exciting new place new smells .
He needs his nails trimming is it hard to do ?
Pics will hopefully follow x

Yes, I'd let the vet or a vet nurse do them first time. If you go too short it's very painful.

If the nails are really looking long then let the vet nurse do them but as mentioned above, a mix of walking will keep them short naturally

Re: about to adopt.
We asked about Donnys back ground and all they knew was that he had been surrendered by a russian couple who had two children . The foster home he was in had two small daogs in residence and had children visit through the day . It was night time he changed I've never seen a dog go from playful to full aggression before it was so scary our daughter wasnt even in room with him when he started .She was absolutely terrified . Took us till 1 am to speak with the lady we had gone through to rescue him and she said he was showing too much aggression to stay . She arrived yesterday and on talking she thinks Donny might have been abused and is sending him for tests to see if he is having brain storms through been hit. Its all very sad and for now it has completely put us off re-homing a dog . thank you all for your kind words and I wish you all and very merry Christmas and new year xx

Re: about to adopt.
I am sorry to hear about Donny but by the sounds of it you made the right call.
I hope you find a suitable dog for the family.
Cheers

Here here! Chaos is a rescue, an ex-poundie, and you simply couldn't get a better dog.
I know you'll be feeling raw right now, but don't let it put you off dogs completely. Situations as you had with Donny are the exception rather than the rule.

Re: about to adopt.
Yes I agree, please try not to let this situation put you off adopting in the future, there may well have been something in Donnys past that caused him to behave this way. Rocky is also from a rescue centre as is as good as gold with all children.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has the name Nanny Dog because of their affection for children, I'm sure the right dog for your family is out there somewhere.
