white staffys!!!
Im fairly new to the breed, but my boyfriend is going to be getting one soon and i just had a few inquiries about the coats significance as well as the likelihood of certain phenotypes.
The staffy that is pregnant is a white staffy and the father is also a white staffy. i am not sure exactly whether the two are both extreme white or piebald, but they apparently have pink noses (a lack of pigmentation so im guessing they re quite white). I understand also that the white coat is not a colour but a lack of colour? and the significance of the lack of pigmentation would mean their offspring would not be coloured?
My question is about the expression of the white phenotype, whether its recessive, dominant or the presence of a gene that acts as an inhibitor? what are the chances of two extreme whites having coloured/ piebald offspring. And also if there would be a drastic difference in the colour variation if both/one parents were piebald.
also, the risks run with breeding two white staffys together? i have read they are more susceptible to deafness and the lack of pigmentation means their skin will be sensitive to the sun. Is this true in all cases? is it associated with the gene, or is it just the rule that many who breed for a certain characteristic ignore the health of the parents and overtime increased health issues?
thankyou for the time, any insight would be welcome and please do clear up any misconceptions or false information I have!!

Re: white staffys!!!
Hi and welcome to the forum. The only thing I know about white Staffy (or cats etc) is that they are more sensitive to sunlight. In the summer you'll need to be applying sunscreen to any sensitive pink bit, including the ears which most people forget.
In honesty I'm not the best person to answer the other queries as I have no knowledge but would assume some traits or problems to resonate from two whites breeding. I have also heard about the deafness but again I can offer no proof that this is or isn't the case.
Hopefully someone with more insight will be along to offer further advice.
In the meantime, pop along here and say Hi to the rest of the Forum who would love to hear about you're soon to be family addition :-

White Staffies can be prone to being born deaf, the link below should help to answer any questions you may have regarding this issue:

Re: white staffys!!!
I don't really know much about the breeding and likelihood of certain traits etc. but my parents have a white Staffy. He was the last of the litter and I think his brothers and sisters all had some kind of colour in them.
He is now about 5 or 6 years old and over the years he has developed little black spots all over his belly, but none of the hair has turned black, just his skin. They have had a few issues with itchy skin but it is nothing major and it is quite common in staffs. He does however seem to be losing his hearing which started within the last year or so.
I would be careful and make sure you do your research on the parents and family history maybe to see if there are any health problems that could be passed down. But I was under the assumption that any white animal has a higher chance of health problems.

Re: white staffys!!!
My peppas white but with brindle patches. Her uncle(not biologically related) is pied white and deaf he's 14 years old and a great family dog .
Just go with your heart and deaf dog can be great dog.
Saying that a breeder that breeds two whites or blues just breeds for looks and not health or temperament so that's not what I call a good breeder .

Re: white staffys!!!
I can assure you that Deaf Staffs are great. Mine is supposed to be deaf since she had her ear canals removed but just try opening a packet and see how deaf she really is
My girl fills me with pride at how good she is with hand signals and recall. Living with a Deaf Staffy is as pleasurable as one that can hear

Re: white staffys!!!
definitely agree with the selective hearing! Ian - very impressed that can hear you open a packet even though she has no ear canals! Haha
Ped is predominantly white and he has a lot of pink skin which we have been told to use suncream on - he has a black nose but i watched something on TV once and if they have a pink nose i think you're supposed to slap the suncream on that all the time. He does have allergies too although I'm not sure if that's down to him being white or if that's just how it is!
The other thing about white hairs? they get EVERYWHERE! Never again will you leave the house for work in your smart black clothes without being covered in white hairs! Hehe

Re: white staffys!!!
Hmm Flo doesn't snort really.. She farts quiet a bit and pretends it wasn't her though. As for barking, well she doesn't do that much either but it's pretty normal when she does, well, I say normal but barking at nothing isn't normal is it ?

Re: white staffys!!!
My puppy staff is white, there nose should always be black by kc standards, white dogs can sometimes be deaf its normally more common in white boxers, the parents of my puppy where both white and she isnt death, but like all staffs you have to watch there ears in the sun, however dogs that have a black and pink nose happens in many different dog breeds its known as a butterfly nose,
hope ive helped

Re: white staffys!!!
can hear you open a packet
emergency recall strategy ..
take 1 plastic supermarket bag ..
the noisy type
screw it up .. place in pocket
for recall if they're deaf to human voice / whistle
screwup / unscrew /rustle-in-wind said plastic bag ..
should work within well over 300 metres ..
well in theory .. Lady hears one come out of the fridge ..
at a three-floor height distance .. never fails to come bouncing down the stairs .. :-)
same here .. nose to ground snort-snort-grunt-snort ..I'm sure our neighbours think we have a pig in the garden!!
then a break in to herbivore mode .. munch on the grass ..
then goes sits on the stonewall between my house and neighbours
sits there surveying the street .. that's 'cat-mode' ..
