Cake What would you do?

Post by debs0109 Sat Sep 20 2014, 18:12

My neighbours moved in at 3 months ago, they have 3 Chua has both of them work all day. They then decided to get a whippet puppy 8 weeks old. The dogs are caged all day, most days for about 8/9 hours. I can hear the pup crying and whimpering, scratching to get out, the Chua has don't really make a noise surprisinglying. Anyway they get home from work let the dogs out, not supervised they go on my garden as well as their own. I haven't said anything to them yet about that. More concerned with the pup. Sometimes they go out in the eve so the dogs are back in the cage, then they are in the cage all night at bedtime. On average each day the dogs must spend about 16/18 hours in the cage. I don't know if they have water in with them or not. The dogs are never taken out, just left to roam around the garden or running around the flat which is above mine.
I don't want to fall out with them but not sure what to do for the best?

Its difficult but in all honesty I think I would call the RSPCA and report your findings, they might then pop round for a look and if the people have nothing to hide and are treating the dogs well the RSPCA will see that. I'm pretty sure you can report anonymously.

I think I would have to call someone also trouble is if you say anything to them you dont know how they will react. After all a call is confidential x

Not sure what if anything you could do really only report the dogs trespassing on your property to your landlord if you have one.

If you do decide to report the issue to the RSPCA please do so anonymously to avoid any repercussions to yourself.

Make sure your property boundaries are securely in place.

I'd like to report them, but in reality I very much doubt much would be done. Providing the dog has food/water/shelter the RSPCA wouldn't be able to take them away, there are thousands of dogs that live like this unfortunately. May be an idea to see if the RSPCA would take a look.. Or report to the council as a noise concern and they may be able to educate the owners. Personally, I would go and speak to them and tell them that the dog sounds extremely distressed during the day and you weren't sure if they were aware, could recommended your dog walker if you use one?

Good advice from Rachel. Agree, I would try and talk to them first.

I would have to tell someone about it. It is so sad, I don't know how anyone can buy a dog just to leave it at home all day.

I would approach the owners in the first instance they may respond to having been completely oblivious to their dogs being distressed when they are out. If nothing it's an excuse to try and get a peek at the state of the flat/whether there is water in the crates etc
