fussy with food
Hi guys, Just looking for a bit of food advice.
I recently switched Pru over to Arden Grange from Harringtons to try to stop her eating poop and for her general overall health. At first she really woolfed it down and seemed to really enjoy it but it seems she's got fussy with it and just sniffs it and occasionally comes back for a mouthful or two of biscuits. I have tried so many combinations of food to try and get her to eat more, wet food mixed with dry, a tiny bit of wet food mixed in, bits of sausage mixed in the biscuit, soaked biscuits, wet food on its own but she never seems that interested. The only thing she seems to enjoy is biscuits with a tin of sardines which I give her every friday.
I wondered if anyone else had experience with fussy eaters or if you have any ideas about what else I can try mixing with her food to get her more excited? She used to enjoy webbox chubb rolls but after I realised how full of crap they were I stopped giving her them.
I noticed that she's starting hunting out poop to eat on walks which makes me worried that she's hungry but what I'm giving her isn't as tasty?
Any help would be greatly recieved!

Re: fussy with food
If she likes the sardines you could make a tin last a couple of days by just using enough to coat the biscuits. Maybe try some tinned mackeral. You could try cracking a raw egg over it or I used to add a little cooked mince sometimes, once it cooked if you add a bit of water it make like a gravy to coat the biscuits xx

Re: fussy with food
I had a bullmastiff that was fussy it was a nightmare tried all different food and combinations and she wouldn't stick to anything so now I get a decent dried food put the food down give them 5 min to eat it if they refuse or leave any they get starved until next meal stick with it and in a couple of days they start eating whats in front of them sounds harsh but if u start giving them all different foods especially human tasty food it causes so much fussiness in my experience, good luck and don't worry a dog won't starve themselves for too long

Re: fussy with food
Thanks guys. Sazzle I think the mince sounds like a good idea, I already do the egg but I think I might try to make the fish go a little further.
Duran I think you might be right about her waiting for tastier options to present themselves. It just seems like such a waste to take it away and throw it but if it means she'll start eating it after a while might just be worth it. Thank you!

Re: fussy with food
When Daisy was on dry, she had a little fish with breakfast and then a little mince or wet food with tea or she wouldn't eat it. Now were on raw and she's much less fussy!

Re: fussy with food
I'm probably not the best person to ask as I've always fed raw/good quality wet complete food, but yes leaving it down for short periods and then removing may help. Putting a little warm water in will also help to make it smell more appetising. I don't feed dry personally because it's so BORING for them. I wouldn't want to eat dry cereal for every meal either! But I DO understand that it's affordable and convenient, and Arden grange is a good food to feed

Re: fussy with food
I would like to feed raw but its not so much the cost but the fact that I am terribly unorganised, I can't see myself remembering to de-frost the meat every day!

Re: fussy with food
What about getting a few tins of the Arden grange meat and mixing a spoonful of it in with a little warm water? This is what we used to do in kennels when trying to save costs with fussy eaters and it worked well

Re: fussy with food
I've posted before how we had a fussy eater for 14 years and I believe we made him that way by changing his food because we thought it was boring for him, or not tasty enough. So we started adding things and made a rod for our own backs!
When we got the pup we were determined this wasn't going to happen again and can honestly say we've yet to see her leave a single kibble from any of her 3 meals a day. Apart from when she nicked some of the in-laws dogs Sunday lunch, which made her vomit, she hasn't had any human food.
I agree that the way forward is to put it down and if it's left then lift it until the next meal. Don't worry, Pru will not starve herself, but if you decide the tough love approach, you must cut out all treats between meals.

Re: fussy with food
Toots was raw fed from the day I brought her home, and she wolfed everything.
At about 5 months she suddenly went off everything and was very fussy.
Now all she'll eat are chicken wings and minced tripe.
You could try some tripe, stinky, but they seem to love it and it's very nutritious
