Iam wondering if any of you had their Staffy bitten or mauled a dog while walking or in a dog park or while playing with other dogs.
How hard was the lockup? and how did you manage to separate the fight?

Our Global Mod called Rachel 33 has worked in rescue and kennel environments and is probably best experienced to answer your question, I'm sure she will be along in due course. In the meantime please come and say Hi:

We've never been in this situation fortunately. We've had a few snarls and warnings but never a full on fight. If We see a potential problem ahead, we change direction.

Hello. Are you concerned about your dog being attacked, or that your dog may attack others? Why do you need to know this information?

Hello thanks for the responses sofar.
First, No me and my Staffy have not been in that situation. But have been in a previous situation (with a previous dog) where police had responded to the scene. With a dead german shepherd and its unconscious owner and me and my dog drenched in blood.
But given the breed and potential for DA. i wanted to see what preparations have people been doing for such an eventuality.
I have to say, from previous experience i know what to do. but i want to know the different situations that other people were in that lead to this. and how it ended.

Most staffys if well socialised early will be ok with other dogs, obviously there is the odd exception which becomes da for no apparent reason and then some where circumstances have caused them to become da x

Socialising as a puppy is key, it's essential. I rescued my girl at an older age so really didn't know how she was around other dogs. Most of them she is fine with but can get grumpy for some unknown reason with the odd dog. She never fights but will tell other dogs to back off.

Whilst socialising is essential, you will over time read your dogs body language too. I do this with my girl and just move her away from any situation before anything can happen from either dog.

My puppy is 10 weeks old and very sweet and tolerant with humans children included, but i notice other dogs and puppys really avoid and back away from here.
In the backyard we share with 3 other dog owning homes, no other dog goes to the yard when Zulu is there.

DA as a percatage isnt an issue if you socialise the dog properly. TBH if you were stood over a dead GSD and an unconscious owner i dont think you would be able to post here unless my reackoning with US law fails me. right now you should be having a colonic irrigation jail style...

Our 2 year old male (staffy x mastiff) was attacked by our next door neighbours 2 staffys (male and female).... our boy was on lead at the time and unfortunately the two attackers weren't wearing collars so it was very difficult for my myself and husband to get both dogs off and when one of them locked onto his neck we thought it was all over. Luckily my husband was there - if it were just me I'm unsure what I would of done, it was extremely scary to put it mildly. My husband hit the dog on the nose several times and he let go luckily. Our boy had a ripped jowl and lacerations to his neck, but he healed well so we were so glad about that. The vet said if it ever happened again, the easiest way to get the dog to open their jaw is to stick your finger up the biters bum.... guess I'll hang onto that piece of information in case it happens again - though we are very careful now about where we take him, and we never let him off the lead. He is a rescue dog who was never socialised and as a result is terrible with other dogs - and is now even worse.

sorry but are you seriouse? can you imagine two dogs fighting??? excuse me while i lube you up and stick my finger up your arse... really... sorry if i sound harsh but the only thing that will work is a break stick and then your have to know how to use it. trying to stick your finger up a fighting dogs arse is just asking for trouble. the best you can wish for is to grab the back legs of both dogs and pull away keeping well away from the teeth end.

I've actually heard a few people say this.... and I've had one person who did it, and it worked! If you don't wish to do it then use a stick - I wasn't suggesting everyone do it... merely what the vet said! Take a chill pill Cool

In our situation it probably would have worked - once the other dog had locked onto our dogs neck there was very little movement between the dogs.. probably mainly because my husband had hold of our dog.

I just hope both us and our dogs never end up in that situation ever again.

Post by Paul Akaw Wed Sep 10 2014, 00:03

I was living in a rural town in northern California and had a female boxer that was very friendly and well known to the neighborhood. 2 yrs old and golden with children. Dylan was a regular playmate for the neighborhood kids. Even the postman comes in my yard to play with her.
One day we were walking the block, when this German shepherd came from behind and got a neck bite on my dog.
I immediately tried to get the dog off my boxer's neck but the owner was screaming obsenities at me and from behind started pounding my head.
im 5'9" and slight build. the owner was nearly twice my weight and a foot taller.people in the neighborhood recognized me and headed to my aid.
the neighbors pounded that GSD with until it wasnt moving and the same for its owner.
I sustained a concussion and was vomiting days after the incident. also a broken left clavicle.
One of the neighbors told me the owner was hitting me with a pipe.
the same one that was used on him.
If not for neighbors I dont know what the outcome would have been for me and Dylan.

I've heard lots of people say staffs have lock jaw, splitting heads and a whole number of of myths, I will take a chill pill when people stop spreading these myths. just because people say it doenst mean its true...sticking your finger up a fighting dogs arse is bullshit. your gonna get bitten period and i dont care who said what, it either wasnt a fight or they found an effeminate dog who prefers sodamy over fighting.
I advise alot of dangerouse dog owners both in the uk and usa, have contact with them both before and after court apearances, i know what makes them tick. what flicks that trigger and what will pacify it. poking them up the arse when a kick in the head wont do jack shite is madness. i suggest you watch this closley http://leerburg.com/dogfight.htm

Well, this is a rather disturbing topic.

I have been in situations with both dog on human, and dog on dog attacks from a variety of breeds, not just staffies. Each time I had to do something different to get the dog off, as each time there was a different background/personality/reason for the attack. I wouldn't ever recommend trying to insert anything into the anus! That just wouldn't be wise. It you're in a serious situation you will probably just do whatever your brain brings forward during that panic to be honest. I found water helpful, either a hosepipe squirted up the nose to interrupt breathing (this was a last resort when the dog wasn't letting go of a ladies arm) or just a bucket of cold water poured over the dogs, we also used to keep two dog bowls tied together at the end of of the kennel block to smash together to try to shock them out of a fight, once I even just used a command and that stopped a quite serious attack! There were times that we just had to hold onto the dogs harnesses/collars and wait for them to let go for a second and the really quickly turn them away from eachother, but again, without professional training you could end up with a bite to the leg or the dog not letting go enough and you tearing the skin. Breaking sticks can be okay when used by professionals, but in order to use them you need to be dangerously close to two aggressive dogs thrashing around, and basically put your hand in their mouths! Again, not a wise move! Hitting a dog when they're in a highly aggressive state might shock them again, but it also might rile them up more, or they may not even feel it. If you watch people that fight their dogs, they usually slap them around before throwing them into the ring.

Either way, it's a horrific thing to experience. Ultimately, as previously mentioned, most dogs with the right upbringing turn out great, I don't know what sort of area you live in, or if you're planning to try and make your dog aggressive, but I would hope not. If dogs aren't coming into your yard for the sake of a small puppy, I would monitor it and keep all training and socialization positive and consistent.

I hope I'm wrong but sounds to me that you want other dogs to be scared of your pup.  he might be pestering them but scared? It's like saying grown up men are scared of a baby.
