Human or dog teacher? Empty Human or dog teacher?

Post by Niffer Mon Sep 08 2014, 09:49

Silly heading but since Milo was in that dog scrap which scared me (albeit no one was hurt) I'm now reluctant to let him run up to dogs without his lead on in case it happens again but at the same time I want him to enjoy himself.

My question is - can a dog learn 'manners' from his human (if so how?) or is it only through interacting with another dog that he'll learn? I don't want him or the other dog to get hurt and Milo's fine but if the other dog has a go he won't back down.

A bit of both really, he will watch other dogs to see how they react amongst themselves but he also needs to know from you when he has done something wrong.

Both!. Peppa learned mannera as a pup when socialised but if she gets in a fight or play too rough I interfere usually just say @gently" but if things escelate ill take her away and put her on the lead.

I wouldnt let him run up to any dog that is on a lead to be safe.
as for dog etiquette, its small part instinct but mainly learning through other dogs reactions and body language.
We can train them how to act in the human world but when it comes to interacting with other dogs it's something they have to learn from other dogs.

No I wouldn't let him do that Nathan definitely not.....he met up with a staffy he knows - Luna - and they played beautifully together. A Springer Spaniel joined them from nowhere - never saw the owner Sad - but he was fine too. So a good day today

Many thanks for your advice Smile
