Absolute crap.
I've known many staffs who were good with other dogs, they just didn't take any nonsense. If a dog goes for them they'll defend themselves, and how. But if a dog's friendly so are they!
It all depends how they're brought up & socialised.

Re: what do dog trainers know
the class itself was very good untill we had to discribe our dogs carictor and i said he was very loving, great withother dogs, and very placid, to be told in the 25 years she had been a dog trainer she had never come across a staffy pup without aggresion issues, she said what does he do if a dog goes for him and i said he would probby growl back, and she said that is a an aggresive dog, and i pointed out no that a dog protecing itself, chances are he would hide behind me, as iv never been in that situation yet

Re: what do dog trainers know
If that's the case, how does she describe the dog that goes for him? ANY dog will defend itself if it's under attack.
Such a stupid thing to say. She's just trying to cover up for the fact that she really doesn't know too much about staffords!

Re: what do dog trainers know

Re: what do dog trainers know
Honestly, though, it makes me mad! Sweeping statements like that are out of order. She should be taking each dog on its own merit and not on generalised assumptions.
I've had dogs & been around dogs for 40+ years & only ever been bitten twice - both my own fault & both were GSD x Collie crosses!
Apart from that, though, did it go ok?

Wow, pre-conceived ideas!
Still, maybe when she's seen him first hand she'll change her mind!

Re: what do dog trainers know
plus i forgot she asked if anyone used a harness i said i did and she said when she see memphis she will tell me if im allowed to use it ha ha

Re: what do dog trainers know
i have to admit I don't like to see a dog being trained with a harness, you don't have full control over the business end! Have you tried using a leather or nylon collar?
Guest- Guest
Re: what do dog trainers know
to be honest he only gets walked in his harness when hes been in the car as its better for his car restraint normal he is just on his collar if im out and about

Re: what do dog trainers know
I tried a harness with Bandit but I never really got on with it. I prefered a double layered nylon collar or a half-check. With my Bully I also tried a harness but it rubbed his chest & sides till he was nearly bald! I use a half-check now.

Re: what do dog trainers know
memphis has been the same on harness or collar no doubt that will change but will not have a trainer make that desision for me and will cross that bridge when i come to it

Re: what do dog trainers know
What rubbish....Not attacking a calm dog and standing its ground against an aggressive dog would be the perfect reaction.

Re: what do dog trainers know
like i say blue staff he never come across an agresive dog yet apart from a shitsu when he was tiny i dont know if a dog growled at him he would not hide behind me like a woos as he has not shown any aggresion at all

Bandit never showed any agression whatsoever until he was about 8 months old. Tehn on our daily walk a big black dog ran over (in the street, with the owner on the other side of the road!) and began circling us, barking and growling & trying to dart in to bite. Bandit took it for about 10 seconds then all hell broke loose! After that I had to be careful. He was fine if anither dog wasn't agressive, but any nonsense & he'd let loose!
Mind you, when I took him to training classes he was a perfect gentleman & I don't remember him snapping or snarling at any time.

Re: what do dog trainers know
like blue staff said it the perfect outcome good with quite dogs but will defend itself if provoked, how long did he use to take to carm down after caryll

Re: what do dog trainers know
The first time I would say about 5 minutes or so, but later on it took him less & less time. I think it's because he enjoyed having a go! Makes him sound nasty, but he wasn't - he was a real softy & we used to meet up with a guy & his little black bitch called Jet when we went on our morning walks by the river. They used to play together & got on really well. In fact he was prepared to get on well with anything on 4 legs as long as they didn't take the mickey out of him!

Re: what do dog trainers know
The trouble with staffs is that they're not slow to come forward! If a dog shows aggression the staff will at least match it - and enjoy every second. However, it'll soon calm down and be a model citizen again, probably far quicker than another breed that loses its temper. People very often don't understand this. What they don't see is the initial aggression from the other dog - they just see the staff in full flight!
It's about time that these dog 'trainers' & 'behaviourists' were given a controlling body so that a consistant set of values can be applied & you'll know what you're getting. As it stands, anyone can start up a training club or call themselves a behaviourist. No qualifications, just get out there & do it! They can do so much harm........

Re: what do dog trainers know
well she stands corrected went to puppy class this week and memphis was a total gent showed no aggresion even when other pups were, he just looked at me as to say arnt they just daft dad,
and belive it or not 3 puppy owners didnt turn up this week due to the fact there was going to be a staffy in the class which the instructor thought was strange as all dogs will only mix if the owner wants to.
so i pointed out she prob put them off saying there is no such thing as a none aggresive staff lastweek.
which i see as a good way to do yourself out of money if you keep losing your students.cos no students =no money
