Bad experience at the Kennel :(
We recently put our little Oscar in a Kennel while my partner and I went on holiday, he absolutely loves other dogs so we thought he would be fine! he only lasted a few days then my mum got the emergency call to go pick him up. He was trying to get to one of the other dogs so badly that he scratched at the concrete and the fence and damaged his feet (scratched all the skin off). The kennel lady said she had never seen a dog so anxious. I am lucky my mum was able to take care of him until we got home but I am now worried I can never go on holiday again, my partner and I are in our 20's and enjoy going overseas once a year (before we have kids anyway!). I know this comes with the responsibility of having a dog but I was just wondering if any one has any advice to prevent him from doing this. He also acts this was when he see's another dog on our walks but I never thought it would become so serious.. My mum's vet put him on calming medication until further notice, should we keep him on it or is this just normal staffy behaviour? (our own vet keeps telling us he will grow out of it so we have never worried until now!)
Any advice would be great..

Sorry to hear this. Has he been sociliased with other dogs? Do you know of any older, calmer dogs you could walk him with to get used to being around other dogs?

I have never put a dog in kennels, are they any other options available to you other than doing this - could someone house sit for you and take care of the dog while you are away ?
How did you find out about this kennel - word of mouth for example ?
Have you tried just popping in there fora few hours to begin with, then try an overnight stay ?

Re: Bad experience at the Kennel :(
I was told Ledger was massively kennel stressed when I rescued him so had veered away from kennels but I also needed to be able to consider it as an option. One near me has daycare so I had trialled him at that a couple of times and tried him for a couple of night stay. Feedback from the kennel is that he is absolutely fine now just curls up and sleeps between exercise periods. Well the big test is in 2 weeks I'm away with work so Ledger has 7 nights in the kennels so I will keep you updated lol.
Other options in the UK is a company called Barking Mad I'm also registered with them and they source foster/holiday homes for your dog the foster families are often people who can't have a dog full time but are happy to have a dog in their home as part of the family. I was matched to 2/3 fosterers got pics sent while he was away and a postcard from Ledger and the foster family when he came home

Re: Bad experience at the Kennel :(
Thank you everyone, yes he has always been socialized from a young age. He plays with my parents dogs and my brothers bull mastive quite regularly and we take him to the dog beach every weekend. The kennel was recommended by my mum and a few friends who take their dogs there all the time, I would never of taken him unless I knew they were good people and good facilities- which they were. Unfortunately no one else was able to care for him, our first option fell through last minute so we had no choice! I don't think I will be travelling again any time soon but maybe in the future I will try to get someone to housesit or even temporary foster care. I thought it might be a bit of separation anxiety as well, I suppose it will take time to train him... Would anyone recommend a nozzle for when I walk him? I have heard good things and bad but the harness is definitely not working to well !
Sounds like a great option for Ledger ! Ill have to do a bit more research to see if they do this in Australia

Re: Bad experience at the Kennel :(
I use a pet sitter to visit Biscuit when I'm doing a long shift at work, and she also comes and stays at our house with Biscuit if I have to be away for the odd night. If you find a good one, your dog will be much more relaxed in his own home and usual routine. I used to work in a few boarding kennels, and due to that I would be extremely careful about where I put my dog. Some just aren't what they're advertised to be!
