I don't judge but I couldn't do it either but for people who can it helps dealing with the mourning process and potentially save life if they choose a rescue dog. My peppa better live forever !

Even thinking about that makes me want to cry, I can't even...I think I'd deffo need to mourn for a while, I know while I was like that, I couldn't give the dog everything it deserved.

if your dog dies 9wOsweY

I would do this.

I'd never stop grieving my dogs death not in a month or years down the line, like my childhood dog, I know it'll hurt but i wouldn't stop that from bringing another into my life, I've had rescues all my life and will always continue to do so.

When I lost my Charlie in November 2012 I thought my world had ended. The grief was so much that I swore I could never go through that again.
I have my Toots now and she is wonderful and I love her so much. It took me a year.
Not a day goes by without me thinking of Charlie. She is forever in my heart.
I run a pet crematorium and of course see many grief stricken owners. Some almost immediately feel the need to get another dog, some say 'never again' or 'it will be a long time before I think about getting another dog'.
Everyone's different and handle their grief in their own ways. x

When Snoop first passed i said never again the pain was so raw and it took me back how much it hurt. Snoop died 27th November and the first few days were spent in floods of tears. It had been one hell of a year for my family with a number of family members dieing and i never want to experience a year like that again.
As the weeks went by i missed him more and more and missed having a dog in the house. I started looking for a another dog and in the end decided on a puppy. At first i was not going to get another staff but kept looking at them. It was my dad that told me to get what i really wanted and that was another staff. The one thing i did not want was a brindle staff because it would look a bit like my Snoop. I wanted a male and was looking for a black and white staff. I didn`t get a male or a black and white staff even through there was one in the litter. My daughter picked a little red diva who thought the world should bow down to her. Lula did not replace Snoop and never will because he will always have a special place in my heart. I adore my little red diva and love her to bits and i`m glad she part of are family.
Snoop pass away in the November and we got Lula in the Jan. I did feel a little guilty about getting another dog so soon after but was glad we did. Lula has a completely different personality to snoop and they are nothing alike. My Snoop was pretty laid back and never bark nothing seem to ever bother him. Lula barks at everything and feels the need to chase anything that moves. I still miss him like crazy and think i always will.

Everyone deals with grief in there own way and there is no right or wrong way.

I wouldn't be replacing Ledger but I'm bad enough when he is at kennels or I'm away I would certainly feel lost not having a dog around the house so think I would rescue again or foster unless by that time I have a second dog already in the house

I have recently considered how my parents will cope when their dog passes as previously they always had a second (and for a while third) dog. They say it's the start of their lives they can go off do things etc but dad definitely will miss the dog walking

I had my last dog pts in 1995. I didn't have another dog until me and hubby rescued Rocky in 2010. I think this was too much of a gap for me but I wasn't really in a finacial position to get another dog any sooner, wish I could of though.

Post by Lynn&Pete Tue Aug 19 2014, 20:02

We lost our old boy Floyd a week before Christmas 2013. He was a 14 year old puppy, who we had from 8 weeks old. We were absolutely devastated, I have never cried so much. He left a huge hole, the house was so quiet, and we missed getting out and doing stuff with him.
We didn't decide not to get another dog. But after a few months without, we just decided it was time.
We decided to get a bitch, and not a brindle, to avoid any comparisons with Floyd. After a few months of looking, researching and waiting, we got Theia!
Her personality is so different to Floyd, we just can't compare them, we just laugh at the differences!
I have already decided that in a few years, when Theia is older, and hopefully calmer, I want to rescue a young dog. I don't want to go through doglessness again!
And Floyd is never forgotten, he was the best dog ever, and it still hurts 8 months on. (My eyes have been leaking throughout writing this post!!) We have great memories of a great best mate, and he is the first thing we see when we walk into the living room every day!! (his ashes are in a compartment behind his picture)

Steve, you really started us all of with this one; we are still missing our Murphy after two months and worse this week when I took Madge to vets for a lump which needs removal in a couple of weeks. First time to vets after he was pts and so glad we have her and we do love her to bits but still miss him so much. Amelie, I love the dog's will and testament, and like to think this is so true, maybe in a while we can think about having a second pup, but not yet.

Floyd was a handsome dog sorry for your loss , and for the loss of Murphy too , when the day comes a we lose Max I know I wouldn't be able to replace him straight way I'd just feel too guilty , I would need time to mourn his passing. But as time passes I would evently replace him with another Stafford , IMO their the best dog on the planet , and life isn't complete without one  Smile

I think our world revolved around Floyd. He had to be considered in almost everything we did. When we lost him it was as if life became easier but god was it boring!!! I'd come in from work to an empty house until Lynn got home and if we had no plans it was as if we were just waiting to go back to work. We missed going to the various places we now take Theia.
I would have got another dog the next day, but as we wanted a pup we had to get the timings right, holidays etc.
Plus we'd just spent £160 on a pair of wellies each for the winter, so we needed a dog!

This thread broke my heart!! I'm so sorry for all of your losses. I've lost lots of kennel dogs, and nearly lost Biscuit a few times, but never one of my own so I'm not sure how I would react. I can't imagine being dog less!

You have no idea how much this applied to us and Marquez. When our last boy Marco passed away in November last year we waited a few months before looking and finding Marquez who was living in a K9 security kennel with rottweilers. We rescued him from a life of being stuck in a cage and no family and he helped us with the grieving process of not only Marquez but of one of other older dogos who grew up with my daughter since birth. Tears are still shed regularly over our old boy by our daughter, especially here in Spain as this was his last home.

We've lost a few dogs over the years so we know how much it hurts (and time doesn't really make it hurt less) and that no future dogs can ever replace the ones that have passed.... but when the right dog comes into your life, you know that is the right time to add a new family member.

Annie, your beautiful boys look very much like my Murphy. We'll never forgot them.

Rodger, I'm sure there's plenty of life in the old dog yet ! But...... in England we have the Cinnamon Trust who take care of pets left by elderly people or anyone who becomes too ill to look after them. Maybe you could contact them to find out how they could help, or if they operate in Scotland. If not, maybe they know of a similar organisation.

For me there would never be a replacement, but it would take me a wee while to open a new void to be filled.

I loved that pic above of the will. Never considered what they would say if they could.
