gastrectomy for Bacon
Bacon has been throwing up randomly for awhile now, so after going through diet changes etc., we finally had an xray and ultrasound done on him.
They found a "foreign object" in his stomach rhat needs to be removed with surgery. As you would imagine, im very nervous about it. Does anyone have any experience with this surgery? My vet tells me that it is a pretty standard procedure and that Bacon is a very healthy dog and should recover well, but all surgery is risky.
Also, was wondering what to expect with recovery? Ill be asking the vet as well, but just wanted some extra opinions.

Re: gastrectomy for Bacon
Murphy had five stones removed from his gut - don't know why he swallowed them but one had perforated the wall. Obviously super surgery and he came home after 2 days. We didn't go to see him as thought he would want to come with us and get agitated. He was still dosed up with painkillers when he came home and didn't eat for a few days. The wound was a bit messy but by a week later he was almost back to normal. Best wishes for a quick recovery Bacon.

Re: gastrectomy for Bacon
Thanks for the info. Well thing is that my vet doesnt do overnight on this procedure so id take him home at the end of the day. I am also worrued about agitating him since he's naturally hyper. Did you need to put a cone on murphy to keep him from licking the stitches? Also, do they recommend soft food after surgery? Just wondering since doesnt seem like a good idea to eat solid foodafter this surgery?

He'll probably be dopey first night and day from the anaesthetic but tell your vet he's hyper and ask for something to keep him calm for a few more days. I think we fed Murph fish and rice to start with or some chicken, just little bites but not til at least 24 hrs after the op. And yes, if you can't be with him all the time, a cone will keep him off the stitches, Good luck

Can't offer any advice on the surgery but hope all goes well. Try the cone but my Flo is an expert at getting them off. Some people here have used a soft ring instead.

No experience with this. We thought Suki had something lodged in her stomach once but the ultrasound was clear. Hope Bacon makes a full and speedy recovery

Re: gastrectomy for Bacon
Thanks again for the advice and positive energy. Bacon is waking up from a succesful surgery. A 3"x4" piece of plastic was removed from his stomach. Most likely a piece aof a headphone he chewed up months back. Ill be bringing him home in a few hours to recover.

Re: gastrectomy for Bacon
So, Bacon had a rough night last night. He threw up a couple of times and won't drink any water... This morning after i gave him his meds he threw up twice. I think his meds are the cause. I dropped him back off at the vet this morning and they said they would check him out and get some fluids in him through the IV so he doesn't get dehydrated...
This is torture. I feel so bad for him...

Re: gastrectomy for Bacon
So sorry, try not to worry he's sure to have some bad times after such an op. I'm sure the vets will get him back on track. It's amazing how they can seem so poorly and just pick up again very quickly. Thinking of you both

Bacons back home now, feeling better. They gave him a new med to control the vomiting. Was able to feed him a bit of boiled chicken and he kept it down.
