Hello from Wren and Jack
Hi everyone, we are new members but the forum has been of huge help and reassurance to us, so thank you!
We adopted Jack from the Dogs Trust back in May. He was found stray in Ireland and after some travelling ended up in Kenilworth where we found him and fell in love. Having owned Staffs before I have found that he has plenty of typical Staff characteristics, all the stuff we love about them. He is a great dog and is part of our family now.
The only problems are that he isn't social with other animals. He isn't exactly aggressive but his response to other animals isn't great. Slight hackles, ears forward, leaning forward, huffy rather than barking or growling, but wagging his tail more often than not. Secondly he bites his lead and won't let go (which means straight home and no walk). We don't know how old he is or what he's been through and he's definitely not a youngster. Any tips to calm him down would be gratefully received...

Re: Hello from Wren and Jack
Hi and welcome from me and Daisy sounds like he's not been well socialised, do you have any friends with calm dogs that you could walk with to practice socialisation?
In regards to biting the lead Daisy used to do this and I would make her sit and stay (like a time out) then start walking and if she did the same another sit and stay and keep repeating this until she calmed and walked properly x

Hi & Welcome from Flo and me
Sounds like a socialisation thing as mentioned above. Take your time and go back to basics with the training. The more you can socialise the better, my Flo used to be like that but since we relaxed on lead and off, she's a different dog and is now more tolerant of other dogs, to the point that she was in a breakfast room with us and didn't bat an eyelid at the other dogs (Apart from the huge Alsatian cross that she made eyes at).
Give it time and patient, training with focus on me when things look like trouble and you'll be good.

Welcome from Darcy and me
What your describing sounds as if he's nervous, not really knowing how to deal with the other animals? As saz says some controlled socialisation should help. Perhaps a friend who has an unreactive dog who can walk with you side by side.

Thank you so much everyone. I will investigate walking with a calm dog. I think (and hope) that it is nerves rather than true aggression. He really disliked the kennel environment so I'm hoping that as the trust builds with us and the longer he is away from the kennels the better he will be. We've already found that he is better on a harness rather than collar. Thanks again everyone!

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me
I'm sure once he is settled in with you in time he will calm down.
Just out of interest what do you feed him ?

Re: Hello from Wren and Jack
Hi Kathy, the Dogs Trust told us to continue his existing diet which is a mixture of dry and wet food. He is quite sensitive and has had a few food issues so we stick with what we know doesn't upset him really.
