how do u know how bonded Empty how do u know how bonded

Im just feelin a bit crappy. Was talkin to someone today with the dogs and i was saying aww i cant really have her off cos of her recall just yet and they were all like well ur not very bonded to each other if ur not exciting enough for her to come back to.

I do little excercises all the time with her but i guess shes sometimes quite aloof towards me. Its just made me think hmmmmm how bonded are we cos its been so stressful

It just takes time, repetition, and positive renforcement. Any significant change to a routine or them going through the teenage phase will set things back a bit.

That could be the teenage phase where it seems like they forgot everything you taught them although she is a bit old for that. Here is a sticky on dog training that may be helpful.

Could well be that. I think you tend to bond more as the training goes on too, you trust her and she trusts you. It does take time though. It took me nearly 2 years to get to that stage with my Flo after we took her in as a rescue but when it all falls in to place, it's great. Stick with it and don't despair.

Hm.. I'm not sure I quite agree with that. Your dog is with you for the majority of the day, I think it's pretty normal for anything else to be slightly more exciting lol! I hike/climb/swim with Biscuit, which taught us to rely on each other and built our bond more, I feel. She does tend to check back in on me when off lead just to make sure that she knows where I am, and will panic if she can't see me, but I like that she's confident enough to explore and walk away from me, as long as she's always in my eye line. Her recall is pretty good, but I think i'll always be boring compared to a rabbit running across the hill! It's just doggy nature.

Also, breed is relevant. You have a terrier that was bred to work alone, not a Collie or a Labrador that was bred to work WITH man. Makes all of the difference in training. It would drive me mad if Biscuit was constantly hanging around my feet waiting on my every word, she's an independent little miss at times, but loves her cuddles and we have a mutual respect. I think she does like me  Laughing but she's not unhealthily obsessed!

Some dogs do take a little longer to bond with people than others. I'm sure you will get there though
