Introducing Buddha and asks for some
Hellow from Buddha and me.
Buddha is a 2 year old male mixed between British and American staffordshire, I think. I adopted him for about 2 months ago. When I first got him home he was pulling the leach and was barely controllable. After just one day I teached him to walk proper, it took about 6 hours but well worth it He wasn't really used to that much walking after being in a cage for so long though so he stretched his leg
After a week I thought him most of the basic tricks in the book, he really likes to please. I currently work from home so we have a lot of time together.
I still train him but in more advanced ways today. He gets over exited by bolls. For instance you can't trade a treat for his boll, the boll is everything. At first he even barked and growl at me because of this so my main focus has and is on this matter still. Today he lets go of the boll when I grab it with out any protest, that's if I can catch him I'm trying to have him listen to me even though his in this over exited stage and I'm making good progress I think.
Every one we meet loves him. He is so social and if you make a kissing sound he will snap that up as if you gave any other dog a treat. Never showed any aggression towards any human. He just roles over right away when you give him any attention, and some times even if you don't..
I'm very proud of him and believe it to be one of my best decisions ever to adopt him.
How ever, all is of course not good - witch was expected sense he has been walking the streets of Barcelona for a while as a stray and has the scares to prove it.
He plays very well with other dogs, most anyway. If the other dog is dominant, then he will not have it even if the other dog is stronger. What I know of, he still hasn't left any bite mark at any dog he's been in a fight with. But he got some of his own from one of them so it's pretty serious fights once it happens. Also, by law, and me being careful, he wears a (I don't know the english word for this) mouth strap so that he can't bite when he plays with no leach.
I think it's ok that he stands up for him self but will of course not tolerate if he inflict damage to an other dog.
What I try to do when it happens is that I try to hold him in submission, but I'm not sure I'm doing it right because he never seems to get relaxed once he is in that stage.
The second issue I have with him is with puppies that wine/squeak when he tries to play with them. Once that sound comes out of them he treats them like a pray. This is the worse issue of them both I think. I don't know how to teach him that that isn't ok. My thoughts are to buy a squeaky toy for him that he's not allowed to touch no matter what. But if you have any suggestions or ideas, I love to hear them

Re: Introducing Buddha and asks for some
Hi, Eric and welcome to the forum. Well done for adopting Buddha. Where did you get Buddha from, was it a rescue centre? Sometimes the dog's past can be a bit of a grey area because you don't know what has happened to them before they ended up there. Sounds like you are doing a lot of things right. Maybe a suggestion is, if he likes his ball so much, why not take it with you on your walks and if other dogs are around, maybe try and get him to focus on this rather than the dogs. If you can distract him this way, you can get him to concentrate on you giving him commands. There are different things that go around a dogs mouth, maybe you are not talking about a 'muzzle', which covers the whole of the dog's mouth, but a 'Halti' which goes around the dog's nose and the back of his head. The second one or more designed to stop the dog from pulling and straining at the lead, but it does also restrict the dog from opening it's mouth too wide. Keep persevering, they are clever dogs and will soon pick up on what you want them to do.

Hi and welcome from me and Daisy It sounds like you've made great progress in a short time so well done. Perhaps it would be safest not to let him play with puppies?

Re: Introducing Buddha and asks for some
Thanks for all the welcomes.
I have now bought a squeaky toy for him, he is insane for it right away but I won't let him have it. I basically try to get him exited by squeaking the toy and corrects him when he attacks it. I think this could be a good way to teach him to stop this behavior, will let you'll know how it worked out.
Another issue I had with him when he first arrived was his obsession with trees. When I let him loose in the park he started to attack them and barked at me for trying to stop him. This problem has already been solved at least, I think it has to do with the fact that he not as blind today in hes obsession as he once was.. or It's just me that knows him better today. When I first adopted him I was actually a bit scared of dogs, so it's been a journey for me as well

I call it a shelter, but it's proabably what you call it, a rescue centre.lumpydog wrote:Where did you get Buddha from, was it a rescue centre?
This would make him forget about the other dogs for sure. I've done this sometimes, but he then completely ignores the other dogs. I wont him to socialize, I believe it's very important and the ball just gets in the way of that for the moment. It's still an obsession for him.lumpydog wrote:if he likes his ball so much, why not take it with you on your walks and if other dogs are around, maybe try and get him to focus on this rather than the dogs.
I'm working on this now, trying to make him listen to commands even if the ball is out. He gets so exited that he forgets about everything and just does all at once with no focus. Some progress has been made where I some times can throw the ball with out him running after it until I give him the command for it. It's still not there but I think we will get there soonlumpydog wrote:If you can distract him this way, you can get him to concentrate on you giving him commands.
He wears something like a basket, but it's made out of textile, not the plastic once. I rather get him a plastic one though. When we run he needs to breath and he can't really open his moth with this one.lumpydog wrote:There are different things that go around a dogs mouth, maybe you are not talking about a 'muzzle', which covers the whole of the dog's mouth, but a 'Halti' which goes around the dog's nose and the back of his head.

It actually seems to work just fine if he's not in an exited mood. When he met puppies on the street, and it's just the two of, them then he's just like a father right away. Protective in a way that is hard to explain, very visual though. The problem is the playful exited stage that connect all the other problems as well.Sazzle wrote:Perhaps it would be safest not to let him play with puppies?
