Hi from Ash & Finn
Hi everyone, I'm so glad to have found this forum as I'm trying to find ways to deal with Finn's aggression towards other dogs. I have had Finn for 3 years now we got him from a rescue centre so we didn't know his background. We have 4 children and he gets on and interacts so well with them and other people for that matter, but as soon as a dog is in site that's it.
2 days ago I bought a puppy and the way I did the introduction was to keep Finn in the front room whilst I put the puppy in a cage in our dining room and the bring Finn in on a lead and allow him to sniff around etc. I did this and he was fine just went round had a sniff and then just wanted our attention. With that in mind I took his lead off and allowed the puppy out of the cage and they played, what a total different dog, however as soon as he goes out for walks his is in fight mode :/
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of ways that I could try and turn his attention to something else as he seems to have blinkers and a one track mind when we go for walks.

Hi and Welcome to the Forum from Flo and me
The behaviour you discribe is not unfamiliar to a few people here. The technique that some use is to get your dog to stop and focus on you as soon as you see the body language change. Get him to sit and calm down and once achieved reward.
When I see the sign, I use a distraction method. My Flo loves her stick more than anything else so I get her attention with that and the issue is soon passed.
It's not going to be a quick fix, whichever method you use, however there are ways to deal with this behaviour and I'm sure others will be able to offer further advise.

Re: Hi from Ash & Finn
hia from me and sasha ,yes you need to teach him the 'watch' command.try it at home, say the word watch and hold a treat up to your face so he is watching you and only you,may take time, but with patience he will learn it,he needs to be focused on you so that when your out and he's sees other dogs it will distract him, good luck with it

Re: Hi from Ash & Finn
Welcome from me and Alfie.
We rehomed Alfie 7mths ago and was told he was ok with other dogs but this was not the case. He does not make a lot of noise, other the odd whine if the dog is over the road. He pulls towards dogs or goes very stiff and glares at them, which the other dogs never seem to "read" as stay away! My friend says he is the silent assassin because then he just lunge at them and try to bite. Have been walking with a friends dog for around 2mths now (on leads and no contact) but apart from he has marginally relaxed with him being in the vicinity, there has not really been any improvement. He will mostly ignore him, but still occasionally gives him the death stare
We are trying to book a trainer/behaviourist to visit for help as not sure where to go next and want to do it safely.
He wasn't walked much previously so had a few other issues, we have been working on. He would not take any treats when out as too stressed, but will sometimes now. So have begun training "watch me" at home. Not holding out a lot of hope for it as he goes deaf and blind to everything else if a dog, cat or bird is around! Worth a try though.
So sorry not much help but you are not alone.

Hi and welcome from Oz the stick monster and me
Sadly Oz is dog aggressive but if he has his big stick on a walk then that totally distracts him from other dogs, without it he is a nightmare. But we can cope with it as we can now identify the signs Oz was also a rescue so we don't know what happened previously

Re: Hi from Ash & Finn
Hello
Has Ash always been like this or did he change?
What kind of aggression is it? Is it when he's on lead/off lead/in confined spaces like passing another dog on the street/all the time?
My dog was dog aggressive for a tiny while when he was sick. I hadn't connected the two until later.
Is your dog aggressive to all other dogs, or are there some he likes and some he doesn't? Does it make a difference if the other dogs are males or females/castrated etc.
How do different members of your family react and feel when they are walking your dog and he behaves in this way?
Have to be very consistent in training. Also being anxious does not help. Reward handsomely for good behaviour around other dogs. Start by just distracting him when passing another dog so that he can get the hang of that first.
I was unclear about how he is getting on with your puppy.
Don't despair! Things can change.
