Staffie weighed down Empty Staffie weighed down

Post by yeahbut Tue Jun 03 2014, 21:08

In the Daily Mail today, the story of a staffie tied up outside a shop in Stoke on Trent. Passersby noticed it was weighed down by a massive collar made of bricks and duck tape and could hardly lift its head. When the owner appeared he said it was to 'make the dog stronger'. The RSPCA were called. The Police attended. The owner arrested on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2647166/Dog-owner-arrested-tied-pet-outside-shop-makeshift-collar-BRICKS-make-stronger.html

A lot of the comments are from people who think the makeshift collar was to make the dog stronger for fighting. Could be...but I dont believe that's necessarily the case: i know some people are also in the habit of putting weights on their dog to try and build up its naturally muscular appearance even more. For cosmetic reasons, you could say.

Let me nail my colours to the mast here: the staffie is already one of the most muscle-bound dogs on the planet. I dont believe its right to freakify it by trying to force it to put on even more muscle. Let it be a dog, let it live and have fun. Owners should play out their he-man fantasies on their own bodies if they have to - leave the dog alone. The staffie achieves all its physical and mental potential through happy activities like regular walks, runs, games of tug and ball-throwing. No need for forced regimes, chemicals, steroids or weights. Amen.

I saw this yesterday, couldn't believe what I was seeing tbh. I feel so sorry for this dog, hope the authorities prosecuted heavily.

Only thing I would stipulate is that the weight he should carry is the equivalent weight-to-size ratio that the staffy wore......................oh and to swim the length of the Manchester ship canal whilst wearing it.
