So I was called
by the shelter staff here in austin to come and help this poor guy called "Papa Smurf". He had been dropped off overnight in their "drop box". From the looks of it, the medical staff believe he had been used as a "bait dog". Even with all of his injuries he is sweet and loving to the shelter staff and shows no sign of dog-dog issues. Amazing how much love these guys have. We are pulling him today and getting him the medical treatment he needs, then on to the start of his new life. I will keep you all posted on his progress.
Re: So I was called
Poor little fella. I hate it when you hear that term 'bait dog'.
Round here there's been a spate of dogs being stolen & word is they're being used as bait dogs. My heart so goes out to them.

Re: So I was called
It is such a bad problem here in texas. It is so hard to get to the people responsible too. But thankfully we can get in there and help them, so many of them are killed when they end up in the shelters here.
Re: So I was called
i know it seems to be widespread now, before they used cats as bait, now their using dogs what next, i wonder.

Re: So I was called
So we get him Tuesday, the shelter is going to neuter him for us (yay). The staff said he has shown a bit of nervousness when other dogs bark at him (of course) but has not shown any aggression to them. He tucks and runs. He loves people, it just amazes me how forgiving dogs are to our species.
Re: So I was called
So so forgiving thats why I can't understand why people do things to these lovely dogs

Re: So I was called
Bait or Baiting is the act of worrying or tormenting a chained or confined animal by setting game dogs upon it for sport. The dogs bite, and tear to subdue the opposing animal by incapacitating or killing it. Baiting is a blood sport used for entertainment and gambling. It is illegal in most countries with varying levels of enforcement

They are used to train fighting dogs. The fighting dogs are set on them and because they have not been bred for, or trained to be fighting dogs they can't defend themselves. They end up getting badly injured, and so frightened that they can no longer even stand up for themselves. At that point they are either killed by the fight people or dumped.
Disgusting.

Perhaps another dog to make it attack and aggresive. It is a shame those poor dogs are used for that... ( if I have it right).
Also I am shocked at the amouth of dog fighting videos on Utube!.... how do owners stand by adn film that Sh%T !! FFS!
Back in the day when we had our ex Navy GShep x 23 . They used to run up and down along the fences with a stick ( trainers) ... used to drive them nuts.. it made them so angry once they were behind a fence.
Anyone that went to close to the fence got a mouthfull from the dogs.
They were guarding millions of dollars in steel and equipment used to put the electric trains from sydney to down south coast.. so it was worth alot of money too.... but funny enough once they were back inour yard ( no wire fences) they were beautiful again... I guess it was a form of conditioning , I am talking 25 years ago now.

Re: So I was called
I agree about the youtube vids. I won't watch them, it upsets me too much.
Round here a guy was recently arrested in a dawn raid on his home. 12 dogs were seized, all staffords/stafford crosses & all with signs of having fought. Three had to be put down & the others are 'in custody'. They won't say where they are in case some of the guy's cronies come after them.
The strabge thing is, according to the police, the ones that are left all have superb, happy & gentle temperaments (other than with dogs) but they don't know if they can be re homed because of the very active dog agression issues.

Re: So I was called
YES Big Wazza 23 GSD at once ... and one crazy Dobberman... he had a bullet whole in his head... crazy thing survived and then bailed my uncle up in the truck! lol...
My dad is an ex police man who turned to security and loved working dogs.
We would go and drop them off around the yards each night... 1 female and 1 male...
My dad made a fatal mistake one day and walked a female past another and one ended up taking my dads calf muscle off.. 81 stictches later.
I had 4 at my house... they were in huge kennel runs.. and my grandparents had 2 at their house.. the others were in a boarding stlye lodge... they worked all night.. were fed like kings and my dad spent most of his time grooming them and washing their kennels out with this white smelly s***!... My job was to hang the fly catches in all their beds!.
and rub p/jelly and bug guard on their ears :0
They were workin dogs but they did have a spot spot of my sister adn I....
ALthought there was one bitch, sheba.. she was pysco.... hated me and I hated her... she had it over me.. I would not go near her.. my sister loved her adn she could do anything to her....
My big boy brock... was ...... 80kgs!, his paws as big as a side plate!.
His grandparents were imperial champions of Germany... still miss him

Re: So I was called
Wow, they sound a real handful!
As a kid I'd have really LOVED to have all those dogs around, I'd have named them all & had a soft spot for each & every one!
I've always had a thing about dogs - when I was a toddler I used to try to get out of the house to stop strays (there were loads in those days - people used to let them out in the morning & back in the evening!) fighting! I even tried to stop two dogs mating cause I thought they were fighting! My poor mum!

I dont know how my dad did it to be honest.. I guess it helped that they were all trained when he picked them up

Re: So I was called
I'v seen a few females being used as bait dogs after being bred and are not wanted anymore, the canines are removed so they can not fight back. when pups are used they'v been known to have the canines ripped out while trying to defend itself, one of the sickest things i'v ever witnessed. Well done for rescuing the poor guy, how did it turn out after?

Re: So I was called
something needs to be done about it world wide!! Dogs should not be used to fight, especially in this day and age!! The law seems to be powerless even when they do catch them!!

The maximum penalty in the UK is 6 months inprisonment & a £5000 fine I think - totally inadequate.

Re: So I was called
Its not just dogs i have a concern for its any cruel intentional act bear baiting/hog baiting badger baiting their sick and they comdem their dogs to death because once used for this sort of blood sport no one would trust their dog with their pets from rabbitt to working on farms around sheep and pigs, its disgusting and nothing has ever seemed to help matters, their just sick and enjoy the sight of animals in pain banning them from owning animals when they obviousely don't like animals is no punishment.

Re: So I was called
They don't take any notice of bans anyway - they carry on regardless, and nobody checks up to see if they're obeying the law!

Re: So I was called
I hope the precious boy is going to be okay.
Heaps of staffy type dogs go missing over here all the time........a bullet is too good for scum bags involved in dog fighting!
Makes me very very sad... especially when I look at Jethro dozing on the lounge, and then think of what some poor dogs are going through.. all for $$.........
Humans have nothing to be proud of when you hear about things like that. But good on you for trying to save these dogs, who through no fault of their own, are where they are.

Re: So I was called
The term "Bait Dog" is very overused and misused today. Here's an article about it: http://www.gamedogguardian.com/education-and-resources/bait-dogs-and-leonidas
A lot of people just assume a dog that may be a pit bull, or resemble a pit bull, that has scars and is well behaved has been used as a bait dog.

In the US it's not even that long of a ban!! Vick, who killed as many as 6 dogs with his bare hands in addition to funding and running a fighting ring, can get a dog as soon as next year (2012)!! It is sickening!!
