Kennel cough vaccine
Has your dog been given the vaccine? Is it a bit like The flu jab that humans get and is given yearly sort of thing?
I have no need for kennels but heard the cough is very contagious so wondered whether it would be worth getting in case she comes into contact with a dog who has it?

Re: Kennel cough vaccine
yes, yes, yes you should get it for your dog if they ever run into other dogs. It's applied thru the nose, just a squirt and they are done.

Re: Kennel cough vaccine
Oh so they arnt injected through the skin then, thats fab to know as I honestly didn't know that.
Needles make me cringe!
I thought it would be best to get it, but just wanted to check.
Is there a minimum age that the vets will give it?
This poor pup Is going to hate me lol

Re: Kennel cough vaccine
It can be given at the same time as the first vaccinations, but it's very unpleasant for the dog - having something squirted up their nose is quite distressing. But don't forget that there are many different strains of kennel cough and the vaccine will only be effective against a couple!
However, if your dog does get kennel cough it will be less severe than if he hadn't had the vaccine.
I had Dempsey done when he was first vaccinated because he was to be kennelled a couple of months later as we had already booked a holiday to Eire & couldn't take him. He hasn't had it since, but neither has he had kennel cough!

Yeah there noses are very sensitive arnt they.
I think I may get it done with the first vaccines just to cover her as she's young and god forbid anything happening.
And reassess when it comes to having it done again, i think I'd rather be safer than sorry though... Hmm

Re: Kennel cough vaccine
I'm not a fan of getting vaccines etc unless they are to prevent life threatening illness, ie distemper/leptospirosis/parvovirus etc. Kennel cough, although not pleasant, can be easily cured once you start medication, and sometimes they can get over it without anything being done! Some (most) dogs never get it at all!

Re: Kennel cough vaccine
So is just like the 'flu' in a sense?
I don't particularly like vaccines either but want to do the best by her. A decision I'll have to make I suppose!

Re: Kennel cough vaccine
Speak to your vet. Some advise it, especially if there's a lot of kennel cough in the area, other will say no need because the risk is so small.

Re: Kennel cough vaccine
My pup cought it just before going in kennels (hes always doing things wrong lol) but my girl didnt catch it from him, he shook it off himself they went in kennels and came out fine, they kennels phoned a few days later to warn me 6 dogs were reported to have it in at same time and mine didnt "re-catch" it.
My mums a vet and i asked her if its worth me having Mazda & Zero vaccinated for it (they go in kennels a few times a year) and to be honest she said its the dog version of the flu and there really is no point, but like Caryll said its personal and speak to ur own vet

Re: Kennel cough vaccine
My Roxy has been vaccinated for kennel cough, but in saying that she has also just recovered from getting a dose of the dreaded kennel cough too....poor baby. She had a jab at the vets and a course of antibiotics to help her get over it. She was bright, energetic and pretty much her normal self apart from a horrible cough which sounded like she was trying to cough something up. Not nice. And YES it is contagious. She had to be confined to home until the cough had cleared.

Re: Kennel cough vaccine
Harvey hasn't had the kennel cough vac, he has never been into kennels plus our vet said to us that there is only a low risk around this area but we will probably get him done at some point

Re: Kennel cough vaccine
I have never bothered, to be honest I dont think its worth the hassle, the vaccine is only effective against certain strains and so might not even work. When my dogs have had kennel cough in the past it was 1 5-7days long cold, they felt a bit down but no risks are associated with it really and it probably built up their immune systems.
