The magic ball
Ledger is definitely inquisitive but fearful of many other dogs when he is on lead but if he has a ball then he gives them a complete wide birth and if off lead with a ball in his mouth he won't try to approach another dog and his recall is 100%
It's been a very long time establishing that doing small tests with well known dogs on he other side of the park etc but my confidence in him is getting there and has been cemented over the last week or so firstly a lady with a spaniel called Shaun came in and asked if I minded her letting him off lead I said with his ball Ledger will be fine so off they both were and ended up having a great run around the park taking it in turns to chase each other (absolutely no attempt at Staffy rough play from Ledger) she said how nice it was to find someone willing to let their dog play with another and have to say it was great to see Ledger interact with another dog.
Well just been out tonight and a boxer pup girl came bounding over (they had met on lead a few weeks ago and she was amazingly bouncy so Ledger had a bit of a grump and they went their separate ways) she was clearly goading Ledger to play but he just trotted off with his ball so she chased him and they ended up having a good run around the park, guess he had enough turned and tilted his head and she just dropped and showed him her belly, a bit of a sniff and off they went again.
Maybe he is starting to mellow as he approaches middle age but it's great seeing him comfortable around other dogs, we are still a long way off a companion in the home I think but certainly looking possible for the future

Re: The magic ball
Great read Jules, I've learnt with Flo that her Stix is the way to distract her and like Ledger, she will totally behave whilst she has it.
Isn't it great when you find that certain trust between you, me and my girl found it a few months ago and I couldn't be happier with Flo, she seems to be more mellow as the weeks go by, think we have found that contented place together.
Am thinking about another rescue if the right one comes by
