Choking Empty Choking

Post by Guest Wed Jun 01 2011, 08:38

last night, i thought billy was a gonner, he had a treat and it got stuck in his throat, he was making an awful noise cause he could not breathe.
None of us knew what to do, i patted his back whilst my son patted his front, it did eventually get free and all was well, it lasted nearly a minute.

It made me realise that I know nothing about first aid for dogs and what to do in situations, is there a book out there that you can buy, also what was the right thing to do, i think he dislodged it himself and it was nothing that we did.
It was really scary

Lynne Milly has done this a few times I put my fingers down her throat once what i tend to do now is take chews away from her when they are small mean I know. I am sure that there are books out their for dog first aid. Glad Billy is ok xx

My staff once got a bone stuck in at the back off her mouth and the noise she was making was awful, I literally stuck my hand in her throat and grabbed it, she was a adult staff too.

Another time she was choking, god knows on what but I literally smacked her back and she splurterd it up.

I didn't know what to do in either of these situations but just did what I thought was best at the time.

I hate it when they choke, it scares the life out of me and makes my heart race like nothing before!

If you find a doggy first aid book, please share!

Once when I had a problem with one of my dogs the Vet told me that although a Staffie has such a large mouth/jaw they have the same size gullet as a chiwawa and this combined with their habit of devouring everything in sight, is why they often choke.

Very frightening when it happens, so glad if turned out ok for you.

Oh Lynne, that sounds terrifying, I don't know what I'd do in that situation. I'm glad Billy was okay.
