Post by Joolslee Sat Apr 26 2014, 15:43

Hi there I am currently fostering a staff pup who has just turned 6 months.
He keeps jumping the dog gate and going upstairs and has urinated on my bed ruining my mattress Sad
He has toys, playmates is walked and let out regularly but still is destructive and weed and poos pretty much wherever he likes Sad
I have had him for almost 2 months and he doesn't seem to be improving ://
Any advice ?

Also as he is fostered he is obviously looking for a home so can you advice where I can put a
Pic up on here :/)))
Thanking you all in advance.

Hello! Oh no, what a nightmare! My own dog wee'd on my bed once and ruined my mattress, i'd had her for 2 years at this point  Rolling Eyes she never did it before or since, the joys of dog ownership eh  Laughing

Okay, so, what are you feeding him? How much exercise does he get per day, and what kind of exercise? Is he jumping over the gate to get to you, or just to other parts of the house? What are you cleaning the toilet mess up with and how do you react when he goes inside? How do you react to him being destructive also?

We have a rescue and rehoming section of the forum, just post a thread there with his info and a few pics, and contact details for the rescue that you're fostering from Smile

Thankyou for your reply.
I take whatever he is chewing and shouldn't be away.
He always has hooves or a kong and toys around.
My two dogs and my two boys aswell as me :-)
He is fed natures diet. He was on that when he arrived. Someone has suggested raw food.
Exercises 3 a day. About 40 mins each. I take my clicker with me always and train then aswell .
He's a lovely dog I'm just exhausted as am trying to keep him occupied and do training aswell .
Yes he usually jumps the gate to get to me.
Any pointers on what I am doing?

Have you considered crate training - I have never used one but have heard really positive things - have you tried keeping him calm so he doesn't want to get to you - lead training. How is with the other dogs, are they separated or together Xx

Some do take longer to learn than others, maybe a higher gate? x

When you take what he's chewing away, do you replace it with something he can chew? He's just exploring with his mouth, and relieving some boredom, he can't differentiate between objects, but does need something to chew on Smile

I like nature diet, it's what I feed my dog but raw is great for more interactive feeding. He may be being over exercised at 6 months, general rule is 5 minutes per month if being walked on lead, but can be more if off lead/playing, just be careful with his joints.

Does he have any seperation problems in general? Or just likes to be where you are? Can second the crate recommendation, great for teaching quiet/chill time. Do you leave him with a kong when you're going to be leaving him in the room alone?

With the toilet training, have you taught a toilet command? And do you clean it up with something that will break down the enzymes in the mess?

Try swapping the things he shouldn't be chewing with something he can. Go back to basics with the toilet training:

Hiya yes we have a crate and I always replace what he is chewing with something he is allowed to chew.
He tends to play more on walks or just plods beside me bless him.
I do training every day to keep his mind busy and leave him with a long and a hoof when leaving him in his crate during the day.
I use a clicker to train the toileting that is what the last lady who fostered him did so I have carried it on.
What would you recommend to clean mess up with?
I try and occupy him as much a possible ! I am not so worried about the toileting I know if I persevere he will get it but it's the seeing on the bed.
Thankyou for your help any more advice isuch appreciated.

I think the destructive behaviour is quite normal, even my dad's whippets destroyed things until they were about 18 months! We just made sure they always had something suitable to chew on. Biological washing powder mixed with water is good for cleaning up (1-4 ratio) or you can get stain/odour remover from pets at home which smells nice Smile

Sounds like you're doing everything right to be honest, puppies are hard work lol!
