In reference to walking, when is "fully grown"
I've been walking Louie for about 50 mins a day @ 5 months old and I'm aware that this is too much so will be cutting down to the recommended amount however he is going to hate it as he loves his walks and hasn't struggled once yet!
The KC and this forum both recommend 5 mins per month until fully grown but I'm not sure what this means as I would've thought that a dog will take a couple of years to fully grow and fill out? Can anyone shed some light on their experiences and let me know when Louie would be seen as fully grown?
Thanks

Think it means 5 mins for every month your dog is so yours would be 25 mins. oh a couple times a day.

also it doesnt include running around a park like a loon, thats free time and good excersise. As for fully grown, its refering to joints and bones which is usually 8 to 12 months. I'd err on the side of caution and go 12 months.

I've always believed fully grown is 18-24 months. The 5 minute per month rule is fairly simple and is usually plenty since you can take them 2-3 times per day.

of all the bone plate closures Proximal humeral epiphysis (in the forelimb) has the highest mean average accross all breeds at 375 days. the next is at 330 days in the hindlimb. muscle growth and filling out can go on up to three and a half years.
at 12 months a 60 min walk is about average anyway for most dogs and owners so the 5 min rule still works okay especially if part of that is an off lead dash about.
most dog sports will allow a 12 month old to participate but with heavy stuff id wait until 2 years like i have with laska. at this age muscle growth, bone strength and joint condition should be perfect for a bit of a safe workout.
you just need to remember the rule applies to onlead walking and not offlead.
