Re: 26 mile walk
In all honestly I don't know, 8/9 is mature but not old, so if he is fit and well then would think it would be ok? Is it all in one day?

Re: 26 mile walk
If not, could he do the first say third of it with you and then would you have someone that could take him and maybe drive ahead, rest him, then he join you for the last third of it?

Re: 26 mile walk
Yeh its all in one day.at about half way I go rite past my mums and sisters house so I could drop him off there if he's struggling. But yeah I could even get some1 to pick him up. I walked nearly 9 miles with him yesterday and he managed it no problem bit this is 3 times the distance . I'm taking him up Ben Nevis shortly so that will be a good test for him although there will be lots off breaks for us both lol

What sort of training have you done? 26 miles needs training for you and the dog.

Re: 26 mile walk
I would think he would be ok with plenty of rests and water. And more than enough time to build him up to it
I'm planning on doing Snowdon with Ledger soon and reckon that will be about an 8-9hr day on our feet so comparible to 26miles time wise terrain permitting

Re: 26 mile walk
If given chances to rest and plenty of water he should be okay if he is well conditioned. I'd suggest a few extra prepatory walks of increasing distance to know for sure

Re: 26 mile walk
Yeh we go walking a lot we have done nearly 24 miles this week already and he is in brilliant shape just now after changing his food and extra walks. but we will be both be training a lot before we attempt the 26 miles. Yeh I will take plenty off water for him so hopefully he will be ok and I've just started him on glucosamine so that will maybe help his joints.
Would I be best feeding him plent off carbs etc before we start just for extra energy?

Re: 26 mile walk
I think carb loading is beneficial. When we plan on taking Suki over 12 miles or so we feed extra carbs the day before. That being said we feed her very differantly on a daily basis as well. She gets three main meals as well as snacks during her two daily excursions and once during her training session. I know most people feed once a day but I feed her like I eat which is 6 meals per day.

Re: 26 mile walk
Wow, 26 miles that does sound like a very long distance to walk, what type of terrain will you be walking on ?
What time of day will you be walking in, eg: the heat of the day or earlier/later ?
Does you dog have any medical conditions that may prevent him from doing this ?
Where is the nearest vet should you need them ?
Will you be able to carry plenty of water for you both ?
I don't think I would take Rocky on a 26 mile walk and he is only 4 years old

Re: 26 mile walk
It will be morning but going into afternoon, there will be 3 different places with vets. There is also set spots where we will be given water plus the water ill carry. No he doesn't have any conditions that I know off but he has the vets tomorrow to get something checked out so ill mention the walk to them.it will be mainly dirt track paths with the odd mile on tar.
So what would be good for carbs? Giving him some rice ontop off his meal? I think best thing is to see how he is once I get to my mums house and decide to take him further or not

Re: 26 mile walk
This is the link to the walk
http://www.thekiltwalk.co.uk/main/events-and-fundraising/upcoming-events/2014-speyside/548-speyside-full-walk-26-miles.html
I noticed there's the option off a 16 mile walk starting from my mums home so I might just do that instead

Re: 26 mile walk
Looks a good walk,
As for Carbs I'd say some whole grain rice and sweet potato would be a good bet it's what I'd be having
