Nipping & Mouthing
Hi my first post!
My Jack he is 8 weeks now, he is a cross Staff/Lab
I got him when he was only 5 weeks old as mum wasn't looking after them, jack is brilliant, he uses the garden for the loo and is playful and attentive, but....
His Nipping is driving me crazy...he mouths my hand which is fine, but the nipping has broke my skin many times now, its very frustrating and painful, I have tried the ouch method but he pays no attention to it, I would love to hear some ideas on how to lessen the *Nipping and biting*
He has lots of toys, like Kong, rawhide bones and other rawhide shapes, tug toys, balls, ropes, he even has a blankie! lol I reward him a treat every good behaviour and put him in a pet carrier for time out when he gets *Hyper*
I love my Jack but like i say its very frustrating, he only seems to be like that with me :/ I feel I am doing everything wrong

Re: Nipping & Mouthing
thats why he should have stayed with his mum and littermatates till at least 8 weeks old thet would have balanced his nipping. you just have to keep saying ouch or" no biting" and give him one of his toys instead of your hand and if its getting too much give him time out for a minute. good luck

If it was an option he would still be with his mum, he was in a litter of 9 puppies, mum was very sick, she wasn't feeding the pups, the owners done what they could to help her. I know this would have helped.
I do this each time I tell him *No biting* and sometimes this makes him worse, i give him his toys to, I am doing everything you are saying there isnt anything different from what i have been doing, I will just persevere for now then, Thank you

Re: Nipping & Mouthing
I don't think either of you are doing anything wrong. It's more a case that they are still pups and it will take time to train this phase out of them.
From what I have read, there really isn't a quick fix to this, just patience and tolerance.

Re: Nipping & Mouthing
From what I've read on here Dan, yes it is. The consensus is that pups don't actually do aggression. This thread is worth a read :-

It might be a little extreme but certainly shows how frustrating pups can be. Read the advice given. It shows your not the only one suffering. Things do get better

Re: Nipping & Mouthing
The link Sazzle provided is excellent. We all go through this and it can be very frustrating and painful. You are not doing anything wrong though just ensure everyone follows the guidelines from the link every time and be patient and the pup will learn.

Re: Nipping & Mouthing
chester was an abandoned puppy they think he was 6 weeks, and when i got him he was a savage and i thought oh my god! try things like yelping as would be done within the litter of pups and mum would discourage this. also i would clench my hands so fingers are not accessible and ignoring bad behaviour turn your back walk away! dont use a crate as a punishment so dont put pup in crate in a negative way. training treats are great for praising good behaviour and calm positive talking help all takes perseverance dont give in u just have to keep at it!!
