Pharmaceutical casade
Hi all, I've just been prescribed some antibiotics (Metronidazole) for Zeus and on the label, it says:
"This product is not licenced for use in animals, but is suitable for use under the Pharmaceutical Casade"
Does anyone know what this is or what it means?

Re: Pharmaceutical casade
I thought that it is when a medication is prescribed and you get a side effect that then requires different medication I.e anti sickness
No idea when it comes to animal treatments tho

Re: Pharmaceutical casade
Good link there Kozmos, it basically says that it means if there is no other medication available to treat that condition then they can use an un licensed medication to treat the animal.
However, not quite sure why they've given me an un licensed antibiotic.. surely there's others available that are licensed..
Think a phone call to the vets tomorrow is needed!

Re: Pharmaceutical casade
Ok so I rang the vets regarding this and their response was that it basically means that the medication which has been prescribed to Zeus is intended and designed for human use, but because it works better for dogs than any other 'dog alternative', they have given me this. Which is fair enough, if it works better, it works better.

Re: Pharmaceutical casade
I've always used this antibiotic for dogs in my care without issue. Though when I used it myself, the side effects that I had were horrendous and I felt so sorry my dogs stuck in kennels on this drug! Works well though, cleared up and nasty tummy bugs in all of my cases along with some probiotics. Once he's off the antibiotics you could try tree barks powder (dorwest herbs) to settle his tummy and firm up his motions, though you might want to check with a vet first to ensure it won't react with anything else he's been taking. Always used this with my dogs in boarding kennels with nervous tummies for the first few days, worked a treat

Re: Pharmaceutical casade
Metronidazole is often prescribed for humans. It can be prescribed for fungal type infections.
