throw up in air - lands on head
Does anyone know why some dogs jump up to catch food thrown in the air or at least try to grab it with their mouth and others will just sit there and let it land on them?

As far as i know and believe drive for the food or toy play a HUGE role in how a dog will react in these situations. Confidence as well as "intelligence" on the dog's part also plays a big role as well. But My new dog mia isnt all that self confident and low drive so just needs work i hope.

Re: throw up in air - lands on head
all dogs are different like we are :)i wouldn't jump up for food but i'm sure some people would if they wasn't getting enough of it or love it to much
Re: throw up in air - lands on head
Biscuit does but her reactions are so sharp, my last foster lab/staffy would just let it land on his head and didn't have much drive, he just barked at everything!

Re: throw up in air - lands on head
I had a Dog Stafford (Bull type) that thrown treats would bounce off of hi face consistently. Sometimes it was because he was salivating so much his mouth created a vacuum and you could hear the suction as he tried to open his mouth in time to catch.
I had a Bitch Stafford (more terrier build) that could catch a peanut from 100 yds if fired from a Cannon lol.
Don't know if its a boy/girl thing or a bull/terrier type thing. All my male staffords have been some of the clumsiest beasts in nature. It is a good job that they have a high pain threshold because "why go around, when I could go through" seems to be their general strategy.

Axl lets it hit him the face but i'm starting to think he isn't that bright... once I threw a frisby for him and he chased it but instead of catching it he just kinda let it fall on his head, yep not the brightest spark lol

Snoop would jump for it but would miss most of the time. Lula see`s a treat and is all over jumping around. The other day she ended up jumping in her water bowl because she was paying more attention to the treat.
