New pup....
Afternoon All,
I just got myself a gorgeous black bitch staffy to keep my male staff company (he is 8 months old, she is nearly 9 weeks old).
Question is, he seems to be quite rough with her when playing, no biting but nudges her over with his nose, rolls her around with her his paws and sometimes chews a bit on her leg (although not hard enough for her to yelp) she is very very vocal and quite snappy with him, growls at him (while wagging I may add)....is there anything I can do to help or is this all perfectly normal play?
Obviously he needs to learn how rough he can be with her as she is much smaller but she does give as good as she gets, bites his lip, and skin and gives him a good nip now and then, I am assuming this is all 'feeling each out'
She also bit him on the balls last night, which I must admit was quite funny but he did not seem to think so lol

Re: New pup....
Same here but does sound pretty normal knowing how rough they play! If you think it's ever getting a bit much just separate them for a time out!

Re: New pup....
Sorry cannot help; but I will be keeping a watch for other replies as I will be getting an 8 week puppy myself in July when Lucy will be nearly a year old.

Re: New pup....
All sounds pretty normal to me, if your not happy at times step in, watch for signals that either is tiring of the play

Re: New pup....
Sounds like normal play to me Bane used to be really rough with the neighbours Retriever, biting at anything he could get hold of and even scared him off so that he would run away from Bane. Now that Bane is older, the retriever gives back just as much roughness as Bane gives, bashing him with his shoulder and batting him around with his paws and face. When they go over the top they let each other know.
If you ever think they are getting too much and you can see one of them a bit fed up, just say something like "enough" and separate them for a cool down time.
They are pretty sturdy dogs, we find Bane plays 100 times rougher with another Staff than he does with any other dog.

Re: New pup....
Sounds normal. Always a good sign if there are no yelps. I am sure that the Pup will let you know if she is not happy by yelping or hiding behind your legs looking sheepish.

Re: New pup....
She doesn't sound like a delicate little flower so I'm sure she'll tell him if he does overstep the line, but at the same time dogs shouldn't be left to "sort it out between themselves" either, and not all dogs play as tough as staffords so would be a good idea to teach manners in play, Biscuit was never socialized as a pup and is now finally learning dog, but she's like a bull in a china shop and will knock small dogs over by tackling them. If it looks like it's getting too much, step in and say "enough" and separate for a few minutes, only allow play again when both are calm.

Re: New pup....
Hi Rob
My last two staffies were the same age as yours, ie Reggie was 8 months and Charlie (girl) came along at 8 weeks.
She soon sorted him out and was the 'boss' from the outset! They had a 14 year long happy marriage lol
Have fun!
