Oscar Pistorius case starts today
Just wondering if anyone overseas will be following this over the next two weeks? Obviously over here we are and it will be a big deal our justice system being in the limelight - let's just hope that very system does what it's supposed to.

Yeah watching it now and believe sky news as well as the rolling news are doing a daily update at 2130hrs every night of the trial
It will be an interesting one to see the fine tooth comb that the evidence will be gone through with and how the investigation is pulled apart, police discredited etc
I researched the OJ Simpson case at school (we had to compare and contrast three high profile murders) and it was things like a police statement saying that there was a tub of ice cream that was melted when it was actually melting (or the other way round) and therefore providing a majorly different window of opportunity

Re: Oscar Pistorius case starts today
Wow, Jules, that's interesting!
I'm going a bit mad - I cancelled my satellite tv a while ago so I don't have access to our local news station, the 24 hour channel or Sky news - all the top ones covering! And BBC just isn't going inside the courtroom.
Working in front of the tv for the next 2 weeks either way and following the top journos on twitter.

How embarassing and bizarre, so far:
1. an hour late (normal though)
2. No sign of judge
3. No one thought to organise an Afrikaans interpreter beforehand
4. The strange woman that keeps popping up at each hearing has popped up again and is refusing to leave although tweets now saw they're "persuading" her to go

Re: Oscar Pistorius case starts today
I wonder if we will ever really know the truth Kathy - with only Oscar and Reeva there that night? I'm glad they are charging him for illegal ammunition and recklessness with a firearm too.
I know the places he used to hang out - very upmarket. I went to the same school as the girls Reeva stayed with in Johannesburg and they run in a very well-to-do, celeb circle. So it's all very much a case of "too much too young, too much money, no boundaries" as far as I'm concerned and that is never an excuse for recklessness.
As for how it will pan out - I reckon he'll either get off on technicalities of our atrocious policing system; or he will be committed to an institution similar to the Shrien Dewani case.
It amazes me that it was reported over the weekend that he has a new 19 year old girlfriend that he met during his December holidays. Really?!!? What girl in her right mind??!
On a lighter note, if you catch clips on Tv today - looooook at our marvelous rain we've had since Saturday

I think he did it, he doesn't strike me as a nice person

Re: Oscar Pistorius case starts today
He definitely did it - I just hope they get him for intent and not a "mistake"

Re: Oscar Pistorius case starts today
Yeah. Did he not kick off at the Olympics saying that his rivals legs had a longer foot on them (those metal things they wear) ?

Re: Oscar Pistorius case starts today
Yes, that's right!
I see they've found an interpreter now, but she saw the crowds, burst into tears and has left, say the journos
I've never particularly been proudly South African, but seriously embarrassed here

Re: Oscar Pistorius case starts today
I would like to watch this case, we have News updates but would have liked to watch on live TV. I don't know what the justice system is like in SA whether it is fair or not

Re: Oscar Pistorius case starts today
BBc are doing well right now covering it live if you're able to watch Claire.
No, a lot "gets lost" in the system and cases get chucked out. It will be interesting to see

Re: Oscar Pistorius case starts today
Thanks Kathy. I've had BBC News on and they're broadcasting live thank goodness (wasn't sure they would).
I cannot believe the witness has to help the interpreter interpret

It does, doesn't it So happy for the rain after an intensely hot summer, though. No complaints

Steve, that's pretty much the feeling over here. Interesting to here how the other half live, eh - fast cars, killer weapons and no regard for the law.
My reckoning is that he'll serve time in a mental institution, though, and not do prison time. Or, he'll get off on all the %^&% up's of our legal system.

Couldn't agree more. Don't know if you followed today's witness? Also not quiet all there. Scaly bunch of so-and-so's!

Re: Oscar Pistorius case starts today
i'm not really following becasue i think hes guilty, why would you shot anybody till you saw who they was first?
Re: Oscar Pistorius case starts today
I reckon he is a nasty piece of work from what I've seen. Retching in court? All for show, he is a fibber

Re: Oscar Pistorius case starts today
I hope he goes to jail but I think the chances are slim to none and he's soooo guilty IMO xxx

Re: Oscar Pistorius case starts today
Ah yeah - I've always maintained that whether it was premeditated or not, he still took a life - but the more we hear, the more I think he's a complete danger to society. Very sad.
On another note - if any of you have followed much have you managed with the accents? I personally struggle to follow the Afrikaans accent as I never really grew up with it and the interpreters are dreadful to follow!

I think he's guilty, his story just doesn't add up, no way it could be an accident!

Re: Oscar Pistorius case starts today
If anyone's watching this morning - they're trying (and so far I'd say succeeding) to prove he was on stumps when he hit the door with the cricket bat, unlike his claim that he had his prosthetic legs on. Good tv!

It's all very odd! Can't get my head around it, he seems so upset but turn the story doesn't seem to add up?
