can anyone help?
I have a male staffy who is approx 6 years old,he is a fantastic dog in most ways but we are having a huge problem with him having bad breath,we have been to the vets who doesn't seem to be able to find anything wrong, but his breath is horrendous,we have tried different foods, bones and teeth brushing and noting seems to help,he also seems to poo quite a lot, about 6 times a day and i have wondered if this could be connected?i would be grateful of any adbice.thanks.

Hi and welcome from me and Daisy
A better quality food may help, this is our recommended list but Jameswelbeloved and wainrights are also good at a reasonable price
http://staffy-bull-terrier.com/dry_food
Alternatively a raw diet is very good for teeth if you would consider that?

Adding a little Apple Cider Vinegar to their water can help with bad breath

Re: can anyone help?
Hello
How long has he had bad breath for, and how suddenly did it develop?
This may sound like a weird question, but does it smell foul as in slightly rotting, or more sweet. etc
What are your dog's teeth like in general? Are the teeth white and tartar free? What are the gums like?
Regarding bones - are you giving him raw bones, or cooked ones (do not give cooked ones!!) And, how long has he been having them?
Does your dog seem happy and healthy, or has his behaviour/appetite changed recently?
My dog's breath went very stinky last week for no reason. I was checking his teeth like mad but they seemed fine. I started to worry because it smelled sort of like rotting and booked an appointment with the vet. The smell was very faint one day and just sort of built up. Then, suddenly (this was two days ago), he did the most enormous vomit - he never is sick. I noticed what I thought was half a tomato in his sick but I realised it was half the rubber ball which I had seen him destroying in the park on Saturday. It hadn't occurred to me that he'd swallowed it as he never eats anything like plastic normally, even accidentally. The breath situation has since cleared up significantly. The rubber ball was hollow so I think was acting like a receptacle in his intestines for food that would sit there and start going off - hence the breath. I was very very relieved that it hadn't caused a blockage but I talked to another dog owneer the other day whose dog eats everything, and regularly sicks up stuff like clingfilm.
I'm not saying this is the case with your dog, but as my dog had no symptoms and was behaving like his normal self, with a normal appetite, I hadn't thought that the smell might have come from a tummy upset.
Stinky teeth are common as many types of dog food aren't solid enough to clean the teeth, and they stick to the enamel, causing decay or gingivitis. Gingivitis, is reversible, by the way.
Finally: do you brush your dog's teeth?

Re: can anyone help?
Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me
Bad breath can be down to a number of things and not necessarily just bad dental hygiene. He could also have an intestinal problem which the vet should be able to diagnose. Try getting a second opinion from another vet if you are not happy with the first one.
The foods you have named are not the best quality and you would probaby be better off going for something else which is on the list of recommended foods. I would also add James Welbeloved and Wainwrights to the list given above.
James Welbeloved is probably more easily available than some of the others on the list. Rocky has Barking Heads which you can find at a good price on line.

Hi and welcome to the forum from me and the zoo xx
I feed mine Hero from Asda. When checked against Harringtons it was like for like but a lot cheaper! Since feeding him that his bad wind and bad breath have reduced significantly. He does poop about 4 times a day though
