scullcap and valerian
Has anybody used these liquids and or tablets for dog stress? It will soon be time for Densil to go on his hols again - he gets picked up and taken to a foster home by Barking Mad and he gets very stressed in the car. We have tried zylkene which helped a bit but not enough to warrant using it again. I have tried adaptil collar, spray, rescue remedy and thundershirts and none of them worked. He will cry and pant when in the car and gets very excited when it slows down or stops as he thinks he is getting out. I have asked the vet if there is anything else he could suggest, but this is a new vet and all he could suggest was the adaptil collar, so not very impressed with him.

Have you tried taking a stag bar or something else he could chew whilst in the car ?, this may relieve some of the stress for him, we use the Adaptil spray sometimes like when the fireworks are going off, it works well for Rocky.

Thanks Kathy but a stag bar wouldn't do it. We have tried thundershirt, adaptil spray, rescue remedy and zylkene and a kong full of treats (I even bought a harp music cd). (he is having adaptil collar and spray, rescue remedy and zylkene a week before his next trip in a car).

If you find an answer let me know Ledger has started refusing to get into my car again, he doesn't struggle once I pick him up and put him in there but digs his heels in if he thinks we are going in the car his stems from being in the boot and not on the passenger seat next to me but he can get very stressed during the journey though I can't work out how much is excitement at going to wherever we are going

Not sure what else to suggest other than going back to basics for travelling in the car, start off with just sitting in the car for a couple of minutes, stationary, then give lots of praise. Increase this to a bit longer, then start to make very short journeys then gradually increase them.

Re: scullcap and valerian
Problem is we do not have a car so cannot get him used to it. He only travels in a car when he goes on his barking mad holiday. Densil pants excessively and will whine when the car slows down as he thinks he is getting out. If it is raining and they have to use the window wipers he goes mental! Hence why we are trying all the options together, although the dap collar has rubbed his neck and made it sore so I have had to take it off.

May I ask how you came to own Diesel, is he a rescue dog or have you had him from a young puppy ?

Re: scullcap and valerian
Densil is a rescue dog. We first got him in Jan 2012 at the age of 3 1/2. We fostered him as he was stressed out in the kennels. We had him for 4 months, during which time we went on holiday so had to leave him with another foster family, and he was also rehomed for 5 days which didn't work so we adopted him. When we first got him we did have a car and also Wood Green used to collect him to take him in for viewings and he was always stressed out during travelling, even when they put a blanket over his crate.

Awww bless him, have you tried contacting Wood Green for some advice ? - Rocky is also from there and have been great when we had some behavioural issues with him. Are you able to drop them an email, explaining what problems you are having, I'm sure they would be happy to help somehow.
