good dry food? Empty good dry food?

Post by foxy.lee Thu May 19 2011, 10:07

morning all xxx i have changed nakita to dry food as she seems to prefer it. I bought her the Bakers puppy food as it says its high in protien and the vet had said she has low protien in her blood. ive looks at some forums and it says bakers isnt a good food for dogs or staffys in particular as too much protien makes them hyper. could this be why shes becoming a little terror lol or is that just her age (8wks). any advice would be very greatful. thing is she loves it and didnt want to go buy some more if its bad for her. thank you xxx

Bakers is terrible stuff (apologies to anyone who likes it), it's full of colours & flavours that are there purely for you, not your dog & could lead to hyperactivity!

Take some time to read through this topic, it'll give you a few ideas on what you could try instead..........

thank you Smile told the vet when nakita got her jabs yesterday and she never said anything about it being bad for her. you would have thought a vet would know what foods are right and what could be bad for her

I don't think vets take a lot of notice of the ingredients in dog food, but they'll normally recommend whichever one they sell in the surgery!

My first vet (changed when Dempsey was about 6 months old) were very much against my feeding raw. They said it was bad for dogs & that I should be feeding Hill's Science Plan. It just so happens that Hill's is the one they sell!

My present vet is fine with the raw (whatever suits your dog best!) but the practice partner said that he wouldn't touch Baker's with a bargepole! Laughing

When we first got Bruno, he was fed bakers small dog by the woman who we brought him off, she said they love it, so we brought some and Bruno didn't seem to like it much, but we put that down to settling in, but nearly two weeks later he still wasn't eating properly, but when we went for the first jab and told the vet she said put him straight on to puppy food, he shouldn't be having small dogs food, so we put him on james wellbeloved and he loves it, eats in less than a minute now for some reason Laughing

My neighbour gives her staffy puppy tin food and bakers and he's doesn't eat the bakers much, it takes nearly to the afternoon for him to eat it from breakfast time.

But look at the list caryll given you the link to, there is quite a few different one to look at Smile

Hi foxy.lee

Bakers is not a good food, as well as all the colours and flavourings which Caryll has talked about, it has those soft bits which are'nt great for teeth. If you want to feed dry and Nikita seems to prefer it thats great as dry kibbles keep their teeth and anal glands healthy at the same time!

A few I would recommend are james wellbeloved puppy, wainwrights puppy, orijen and natures diet (a wet food). These are the only ones I have tried so cant really comment on the others, a big bag will last her ages too!

Before I realised what it was like, I gave some to Dempsey. He was on;y about 4 months old. He went absolutely berserk! He was almost throwing himself against the walls he was so hyped up!

That was when I went raw (I'd fed my previous dog a mainly raw diet for years, but was told that dry was better!). He calmed down within days!
