Poorly Otis
Hi everyone,
How are you all?
Just need to come and offload as last night Otis was very poorly
He had been poorly Friday but only once so we didn't think much of it to be honest, then Saturday my OH came to see me at dinner in work, Otis decided to destroy his bed whilst the OH was out, which is very out of character for him to be honest as he isn't usually destructuve when left on his own and it was only for an hour. Then around 3pm he started to be sick and stopped at around 6pm, he was sick two or three times and at that point was still taking water but he was shivering and seemed quite lethargic. I rang the vet and they wanted to send us on a 45min journey and I didn't really feel they give me the advice I was looking for instead it was just yes we will see him and we want the out of hours fee. I was also worried as that stage I was over reacting.
So we gave it half an hour and he seemd to perk up and take in more water so we decided not to take him and see how he went over night.
But later on about 1.30am he started to be sick again and this happened around three time and at 3.30am I couldn't let him suffer anymore and he had stopped taking in water. He has also pooed in the kitchen and there was traces of blood which made me panic and I was straight on to the vet which is 5mins away from us. He was fantastic spent lots of time on the phone building a picture of what was happening and what the potential may have been and he let us make the decision of taking. Also the sounds coming from his tummy were incredible!
We got there and he seemed bright and alert but I dont know if that was adrenaline from being taken there and he wasn't so sure of the vet at first either! But they were soon friends. He fully examined him and played his bag pipe tummy which honestly was like nothing I have ever heard! We drew up an action plan of bloods, x-rays, hydration ect and all I can say is that thank god he is insured! We left him with the vet as the process was going to take a little while.
7.00am we get a phone call to say his blood pH was off, he also had low postassium (which was to be expected) and his packed cell volume was just outside the normal range so they put him straight on fluids, oh and his intestines were inflammed. The vet put it down to gastroenteritis.
2.00pm I rang to get an update and he was fine but had turned his nose up at dog food and hardly touched some chicken they offered Which is to be expected I guess.
It hasn't hit me till this evening that I won't be seeing him until tomorrow We thought that going to visit him may unsettle him as he gets so excited when he sees us and I hate the thought of leaving him again. I know he is in good hands and it won't be long now but I hate the thought of him not being very well.
If you get to the of this end you deserve a medal - but just helped to offload and share with like minded people

Re: Poorly Otis
I know how worrying it is when they aren't well.
Flo ate a large bar of choc last year (my fault entirely for having a late night choc munchie moment then leaving the bar on the arm of the sofa). We woke to find her in the equivalent of of a cold sweat.
24 hrs in hospital with plenty of fluids did the trick but I count us lucky.
I hope Otis has just had a severe tummy bug and that when you get to see him tomorrow, it will be licks and hugs all round.
So very hard when they aren't in their usual place

Re: Poorly Otis
Well just rang for an update and he is doing okay no more sickness of diarrhoea so that's good, but he still hasn't eaten much I pray that when he comes home he shows interest. I just worry as he has been picky with his food lately as it is a night of worry now and I won't see him till around 6pm as I'm in uni, but my OH Has arranged the day off.

Re: Poorly Otis
What a worrying time for you - poor Otis
Hopefully it is "just" a stomach upset which he is now recovering from. As we know ourselves, it is difficult to get interested in food again after a bout of digestive upset, so please try not to worry. Your vet will be making sure that he is not dehydrated and will doubtless give you advice as to how to proceed when you take him home. A little scrambled egg (no milk or butter) may tempt him, or a breast of chicken boiled with some rice, strained and chopped up might also settle his tummy and awaken his interest in food.

Re: Poorly Otis
Thanks lynda- think I will be trying everything.
Unfortunately he has had a setback last night, he passed diarrhoea with blood in it so they are now eager to keep him in until this afternoon to see if he does it again it might be all the drugs he is on that have upset his stomach but can't explain the blood. Also yet again he doesn't want to eat food which is concerning for them with the diarrhoea and if he was to come home and didn't start showing an interest quickly I think he would be in a dangerous position and end up back on fluids. Such a worry, had a little cry this morning. The vet is nothing shirt of fantastic though.

Just waiting on a phone call from the vets now for an update after they walk them to see if there was any change... I think my OH is going to go down and try and coax him some food if they think it's worth a try... Just wish I could be with him
