Trouble with trimming claws!!
Belle really needs her claws trimmed as they are getting a little too long! How ever she hates having it done, unfortunately when she was younger she moved as the vet was about to cut and her claw was cut very short and bleed terribly( she need it dressed for 24 hours to stop the bleeding!). Not the vets fault and she felt terrible but ever since Belle hates having them done and so do I as I worry it will happen again.
Another thing was a previous vet we used when we first got her told us not to get her claws trimmed and not to trim puppies claws?!!
So her claws always seem a little too long now even when trimmed.
Many thanks in advance

Re: Trouble with trimming claws!!
I haven't needed to do Moo's, on the odd occasion when she has split it I can and she will let me. Best to see a vets, usually a nurse will do it for free and having 2 people really helps xxx

Re: Trouble with trimming claws!!
Thank you Janey, I think we need to walk her more on pavements etc as we always take her to a park so she's not wearing them down much when out either xxx

Re: Trouble with trimming claws!!
I tried to get Ledgers done at the vet they gave up, he was muzzled and taken out back to be held down by as many staff as possible but still managed to wriggle free. They managed the dew claws but said his quicks were really long so with even the smallest clip they bled the vet appologised and didn't charge
Tbh he gets plenty of pavement walking to keep his main claws in check it's just the dew claws that hook over and stab me lol

Re: Trouble with trimming claws!!
Belles are the same she has really long quicks too! So if the vet does manage to cut her claws it's only the tips!
Thanks for your reply xxx

Re: Trouble with trimming claws!!
Unfortunately we had the same thing happen to us, but it was nearly all of his quiks that the pet groomers caught He was shaking and so stressed afterwards I couldn't believe that she dared asked to be paid after putting him through so much pain!
We struggle to do his now. The OH really has to hold him tight to stop him from wiggling. He whines and sometimes even shows his teeth at me. Poor guy. We just try to do it when he's sleepy. Have lots of treats there with us and try and distract him as much as possible.

It can be a real pain to trim, better to keep them down through walking

Re: Trouble with trimming claws!!
claws should really be kept short by plenty of pavement walking but i think the big problem is dew claws as they don't come into contact with the ground. tessa tore hers off last year in the park (don't ask me how) and thank god for insurance. since then my missus files them gently while she is asleep on her lap a couple of times a week.

Re: Trouble with trimming claws!!
Rocky's claws seem to grow quickly despite having some wealk on hard surfaces. We have a canine training centre nearby which has a parlour attached so we take him there for his nail clip every couple of months or so. They charge a nominal fee (£4.00) to have them done.

Re: Trouble with trimming claws!!
snoop would not let you near his claws he just didn`t like it and would wiggle out of the way.
I think Tallulah will have hers done if need be by the vet but i`m not looking forward to it

Re: Trouble with trimming claws!!
Might be worth trying a nail file-My Staff is fine when I clip her nails but the Pugs... they have a complete nail clipper phobia! A good strong nail file does the trick and you can do it while they are sleepy.

Re: Trouble with trimming claws!!
my dad used to use a reasonably fine engineering file to do our dogs when i was a lad. he'd support the toes and with a few gentle strokes of the file they'd be down. we did a fair bit of pavement walking too which kept them down..apart from a bit of mouthing, the dogs never protested too much, and as you know, a staffie will do almost anything for a scooby snack!

Re: Trouble with trimming claws!!
Its something I would not like to do myself as Lucy has black claws which makes it hard to see where the quicks are. Thank goodness they are being worn down with pavement walking, but I must say...I haven't check-out her dew clews yet?
