The worst thing ever to happen!
On Monday night the worst thing happened, Tyson and Paris were play fighting as normal before bed and i looked at them lying still all of a sudden... i thought it was a bit unusual until i relised Paris had her jaw trapped in Tysons CHAIN collar and it was tight aroung his neck. He couldnt breathe! I tried my hardest to un hook it from her bottom jaw, Tyson at this point was gasping. eventually after what seemed forever Paris managed to get free. She had small grazes on her jaw and of course blamed me! Tyson being Tyson was not fazed but i hadnt noticed at the time he had bit my hand obviously in the panic to get the chain off! I think i must of been in shock coz as soon as it was over i went faint and dizzy. It was also a hospital job but my poor babies could of died because of that horrible chain.

Oh, you poor thing, you must have been frantic! Hope you're ok now - did you have to have an anti tetanus?
I NEVER have a collar of any sort on my dogs indoors - precisely for this reason!

I was given a strong course of anti biotics, it needs a couple of stitches but wont do it till its clear of infection. Bless him he must of just been desparate. I was in a right state crying like a baby once i got home and had time to think about everything lol glad the nurse understood when i was saying they are loved like my children!

Re: The worst thing ever to happen!
Thats the best thing you could do..getting rid of the chain collars.. Inca has never had a chain or collar on from day 1 as she much prefers her harness... but i can only imagine how terrified you must have been.. Thank god both you & your babies are ok ...

Re: The worst thing ever to happen!
I won't put any sort of collar on my dog indoors - they can get caught on all sorts of unlikely things & it isn't worth the risk.
Anyway, it must be so uncomfortable having to wear a collar 24 hours a day!

Re: The worst thing ever to happen!
i dont have the collar on tight, it is loose enough to move around his neck, he never has got caught on anything but i am more or less always in the same room as him so if he did one day i would prob take it off him. I guess people just have their different opinions

Re: The worst thing ever to happen!
My dogs always wear there collars apart from at night or whenever they are separated ie. kaos is in his crate. Having two males i have to have measures in place so if nessesery i can separate quickly and easily and for me personally i need them both to wear thier collars for that reason. If i only had the one dog they wouldnt wear it indoors though i dont expect x

I know what you mean. I'm just very concious of the fact that 2 playing dogs can get caught up in each other's collar. If that happens to 2 males, you'll end up with a blood bath.

Re: The worst thing ever to happen!
yea i see your point lol but its sort of a catch 22 situation with me....if i leave them on they could get caught and fight etc if i take them off and they start fighting i litterally cant get hold of them to separate. 95% of the time mine are great together but play can turn in a split second with no or little warning and i just like to be straight ontop of them pushing my weight around when it does turn nasty so they are in no doubt of who will have the last say lol x

Re: The worst thing ever to happen!
i normally take memphs collar off on a night but there are odd times hes went to sleep in his crate early so he kept it on

Re: The worst thing ever to happen!
How frightening for you. A few months ago Izzy decided that chewing Kita's collar was a new craze (one that I didn't find amusing), so Kita went "naked" for a while and it's only in the last week that she has been able to wear a collar without Izzy trying to chew it. It didn't stop her mouthing Kita's neck and being the younger, bigger & stronger of the two it is something I constantly worry about.

Sorry to hear about your fright, glad your all ok though.
And no collat wearer here either, in fact Lola has never had a collar only a harness for walks.

Re: The worst thing ever to happen!
Chains collars if must used should be put on by the front door and taken off by the front door before and after walks.
The same happened with my nans dogs and my whippet roxy she got her tooth stuck and he nearly died.

Re: The worst thing ever to happen!
wow that would have been scarey. I saw on a vet show here about a dog that tried to leap out the open window and it's choker chain got caught.. and it was hanging for ages... it was okay but put me right off leaving a choker on my doggies. Glad yours are okay...

Re: The worst thing ever to happen!
Thanks everyone for your messages. It was so lucky i was there and i couldnt stress enough about collars off in the house. I do see the other side where you might need them to separate but i couldnt stress enough (Not a chain collar) My boyfriend thought Tyson looked more comfortable with it on nice and loose as they both get walked with harnesses but when something like that happens and you cant undo it your in a situation!

Chain collars (other than half check) should only ever be used for training, not for general wear/walks.

Re: The worst thing ever to happen!
i find it weird not to have a collar on. All my dogs iv ever had have always worn collars all the time, they look strange without them. I personally havnt ever had a problem with them wearing one all the time.
Plus if they get out and dont have a collar on with tags on you are breaking the law &/ people havnt got anything to grab hold of if needed.
Mouse's isnt a walking collar its just her collar, unfortunatly i have to put her harness on for walks because she throws up if you walk her on the collar cos she has a funny throat.
Its only like all 15 of my piercings never get taken out or my watch which i only take off when i go in the bath/shower. You just get use to it.
But then thats my personal opinions on the matter.
