Bane going RAW...A few questions?
Ok so we are getting ready to switch Bane to RAW and just have a few questions after reading lots about it.
We are going to order from DAF to see how that works out:
- Chicken Mince,
- Chicken Meat chunks,
- Chicken Wings + Drummers mix,
- Turkey something or other.
This will keep him going for the first few weeks, and then we will look at getting some tripe, pork, fish and beef etc.
Does anyone else order from here? Got any favourites that are really good value for money or anything your dogs particularly go nuts for?
In terms of the weights given, it seems everyone goes by what keeps their dog in shape. He is currently on 300g a day of dry food. Will he need more than this in raw meat?
He weighs 15kg and is 5 months old. We don't know what he will weigh when fully grown as he is cross so can we just pick a number say 500g a day and start there see how we get on? (That would be 2% of an adult 25kg dog)
Do you feed fresh or frozen more? Does it matter if they have half defrosted meat or multiply-refrozen and defrosted food?
He has 3 meals a day. Does it matter if he has a bit of everything for each meal? Or should we feed just meat in the morning and bones later throughout the day?
I think someone else asked about supplements/herbs. Is it needed? Or more of a personal preference to add something once in a while?
How do we know if he has an intolerence to something? Will he be sick when he's eaten or will his poos not ever firm up etc?
Is it alright to introduce offal after 3 or 4 weeks of testing different meats? Or is it a good idea to try and introduce small amounts early on?
I'm sorry if all of these have been asked before, and thanks for any help Can't wait for his last bag of food to be finished!

yes i order from DAF and the boys go mad for their venison products but you don't need them yet as your not that far along!
In terms of the weights given, it seems everyone goes by what keeps their dog in shape. He is currently on 300g a day of dry food. Will he need more than this in raw meat?

I don't do % and i don't weigh the boys food, so yes i go by my boys shape. An example i always give is
Harvey is 24kg and needs 500g to maintain his weight
Chance is 48kg and needs 500g to maintain his weight - when neither of them are working so a normal day...
however i do not feed the same amount of food each day, one day they could eat 3kg and the next nothing or 100g etc etc but obviously you don't do that for a dog new to raw
Do you feed fresh or frozen more? Does it matter if they have half defrosted meat or multiply-refrozen and defrosted food?
I give more frozen to make food last longer, as i have 2 massive power chewers who have been on raw years now! yes you can give half defrosted food, and refreeze until your hearts content!
He has 3 meals a day. Does it matter if he has a bit of everything for each meal? Or should we feed just meat in the morning and bones later throughout the day?
you feed what you want when you want, it doesn't matter
I think someone else asked about supplements/herbs. Is it needed? Or more of a personal preference to add something once in a while?
if you give a good varied diet then no you don't need to supplement, i give herbs, oil etc as an add on to their diet for the health benefits nothing to do with supplementing their diet
How do we know if he has an intolerence to something? Will he be sick when he's eaten or will his poos not ever firm up etc?
intolerances show up with itchy red ears/feet being sick, having the runs etc
Is it alright to introduce offal after 3 or 4 weeks of testing different meats? Or is it a good idea to try and introduce small amounts early on?
I wouldn't no offal is very rich and causes very loose stools in a dog not used to them, so needs to be held off for a while, and given in tiny pieces to begin with
I'm sorry if all of these have been asked before, and thanks for any help :)Can't wait for his last bag of food to be finished!

Re: Bane going RAW...A few questions?
Yes indeed it does! As it seems with most other people, we have read so much about it our brains have gotten a little scrambled
Think we have everything planned out now and with the answers to those final few bits, we are pretty confident with it I'm really hoping that it will help clear up his scratching too!

Re: Bane going RAW...A few questions?
Well i would swap him to raw, and be aware that some dogs scratch a bit when swapping, as part of the detox stage so you need to give it a couple of months + to see any real changes, but then you can start giving things like coconut oil

Thanks Ella that's good to know Hopefully we will see some change in him otherwise it might have to be back to the vets for some allergy testing.

Re: Bane going RAW...A few questions?
He was on 2 piriton per day as prescribed by the vet which made it a little better. Then found on here you could use the Tesco own brand hayfever tablets which he now has 1 per day...they seem to work for a bit, but he still itches when we are not looking!
Is it possible to pick up a high strength vitamin c from the supermarket? Or would I have to go to the pharmacy? I didn't know they were antihistamines too! Thanks again

Re: Bane going RAW...A few questions?
Vit C is given to the bowel tolerance of your dog, so that means you can give a few tablets etc until it gives them the runs then you know you've reached their tolerance so you reduce a little. Although always best to start small and work up.

Something like this is good, as ascorbic acid powder is better quality then just a vit c tablet which normally have a few fillers, also you wouldn't need much at all

Re: Bane going RAW...A few questions?
Coco has been on RAW now for 3 weeks and her coat is 100% better!!!! No more pink itchy belly. I go back to the vets next week to find out about the mite (I stopped the medication as her hair had started growing back). She looks so much happier and healthier!!! Thank you to all who offer support and advice on this site, it's been a god send xx

Re: Bane going RAW...A few questions?
Aw that's great news! Thanks so much for letting us know I'm glad she's better! I hope the vet trip goes well too!
Bane is on Advocate for mites. The vet didn't find any from 5 scrapes but still said to give it incase. After the first dose, he got patchy ears? Second dose was Monday and again his ears have gotten more patchy. Not sure if that means he has mites or it's just a reaction to the medication?

Re: Bane going RAW...A few questions?
Hair loss can increase when they start treatment as any hair that had a mite in the follicle will fall out x

That's what we thought. They must be ninja mites then if the vet missed them after 5 scrapes O:
