Surprised Koda ate the screen door

Post by AussieStaff Tue Jan 14 2014, 02:31

Left Koda alone for a long time yesterday as we both had to go to work, came home and he'd eaten the side of the screen/security door (the big fabric strip, whatever that does !). Whilst not happy I accept these things happen, he was alone for a longer time than usual and it's a lesson for us, but my OH went bananas and no matter how much I told him these things will happen and we just need to be on our game more and do what we can to minimalise damage he wasn't accepting of it. Koda's only 13 weeks, he's still finding his way too. We're pretty firm on him so I'm sure we're doing all the right things to ensure we have a well behaved, mannered dog in the future. Fingers crossed we all have a much better day today ! Just wanted to share as feeling a bit blah.

Naughty Koda, Jed scratched the laundry door today Sad not much, but still, i guess if we kept them in crates we wouldnt get these problems but i cant do that. Yes it is annoying and makes you angry when they do stuff like this --- Hope thats the worst he ever does  Love Struck

I don't like the thought of him getting a wee zap (wuss, me !) so wouldn't use one, and guess ultimately he'd just find something else to destroy instead lol

no i am not keen either but if it gets worse i guess it is something to think about, i had to set something up for my red heeler as he kept jumping the fence and chasing the kids on their bikes, it was only a little zap and after a couple of weeks he stopped trying  praying

He is still very young and has loads to learn yet. Are you able to leave toys he is allowed to chew with him while you are away?

See if you can get hold of some bitter apple spray like in the link below to spray on things you don't want him to chew, I've never tried it but heard it does work very well:

Oh no Koda! What were you thinking?! Laughing Cheeky monkey! I would like to think we could leave Bane with the run of the house at some point but don't trust him! They always find something they shouldn't have Tongues

Surprised crates

Post by silver Tue Jan 14 2014, 16:53

Hi Bek
I have always used crates when my dogs were young.
I have had my pup Toots for almost a week now and she has a large crate with lots of blankets and toys.
She has slept in it every night without a whimper. I go out for maybe 2 hours and she goes into her crate and goes straight to sleep.
The thing is, you can go out and know that the pup can't hurt him/herself or destroy things.
So when you return, all is wonderful and there is a happy atmosphere all round!
Toots is my third staffie and I've never had a problem using a crate.

Post by AussieStaff Tue Jan 14 2014, 18:44

That's great thanks! Congrats on your new pup, how exciting!! We have an open 'playpen' we used initially but we've both had to go into work at aw time for the most part of a work day so Ii would never leave him in the pen but grateful he has the whole outside just need to curb the chewing a little, we puppy proofed as much as poss but I didn't expect him to eat the door trim lol learning learning learning ...
