Keeping track on raw and hopefully other new raw feeders can find good tips along the way

Yes start with chicken for the first week or until his poo hardens (if it goes soft initially) then introduce one meat at a time so you can spot any intolerances. How many weeks food will you be ordering?

I'd go for a selection of chicken (pieces on the bones and some mince) and some tripe (either best of lamb). That would be OK for the first 2/3 weeks

Im gonna go for 4 weeks stock at the start, with advice from here, after having a quick look i reckon 30quid odd would be all i need to spend to start me off.

You mean then something like chiken wings/knecks/feet to start off with.

Also, my understanding is that when you have a puppy it needs to be at least 8-10% of his bodyweight per day where as adult dog is 2-3%,is that right?

Im going to get my pup weighed this week before i start anything,in sept he weighed 17kg so i ashume hes around 20kg ish maybe more, but for talks sake say hes 20kg that he needs 1.5-2kg weight of food a day (bones included)? and that if i use say chicken feet then i need to take some bone out of it,or am i best to get chicken chunks aswell, and give him chicken chunks and chicken feet for a dinner, but more chicken chunks in his bowl so theres not to much bone. if you know what i mean.

Sorry for all the questions, but i really want to know this so it can be as smooth transation as possible

Yes its 10% of body weight for a puppy, although Brox is 9 months now so I wouldn't have thought he needs that much? 2kg of food a day is an awful lot!

Any chicken pieces on the bone, such as wings, necks, thighs are good and then yes probably some chicken chunks/mince as well. Chicken feet are more just a treat  Big Grin

Maybe start him at 3/4 % and see how he goes? If you don't think its enough you can increase it. It's not an exact science and if you over think it you will put yourself off!

Was thinking of going to butchers today getting a couple of whole chickens and telling him to mince it up for me,and then give broxi that but with boneless chicken to so its not to much bone, and a couple of other things to do me untill i order in next week.

What you think

Good idea, I started with minced chicken carcas. Minced whole chicken should be fine as a start with regards to the bone/muscle ratio. It doesn't have to be exact every day  Smile I try and get my balance right weekly or fortnightly because thats how often I go shopping but some people do over a longer period. You will know from his poo if your giving too much bone as it will be white.

Cool thats great,i have just threw out the rest of his kibble, thats me finished now with kibble, its done nothing but stress me out because are lovely little man likes things alittle more tastier than dry food lol,and no amount of eggs sardines or anything works for longer than a few days.no longer am i gonna waste my money on something not only he doesnt enjoy but in generally probably not even best for his health.

Thanks sazzle and your Daisy is so cute in that pic, they know how to rap you around there paws lol, hard to say no to a staffy face lol

Does anyone use this guideline

7-10 weeks     8 - 10% of bodyweight
10-16 weeks   7.5 - 8.5% of bodyweight
16-20 weeks  6.5 - 7.5% of bodyweight
20-24 weeks  5.5 - 6.5% of bodyweight
24-36 weeks  4.5 - 5.5% of bodyweight
36-56 weeks  3.5 - 4.5% of bodyweight
56-68 weeks  3.5%
68 weeks plus is adult maintenence at 2-3%

nope i don't use any guidelines. I go on the body condition of my dogs instead. I know when i worked it out harv needs around 3% to maintain and Chance needs 0.9% a day to maintain

To be honest I've never actually weighed anything, when I started the shop told me Daisy would need somewhere between half to one of their packs of mince a day as a rough guide so I started on 2/3rds of a pack a day. Now we're getting into it more I mix it up a bit so I may feed a quarter mince muscle meat or tripe each meal with something on the bone, like a chicken wing or thigh or chunk of turkey neck. or one meal might be a chicken carcuss or this morning she had a tongue. Then I also add the liver and eggs needed each week.

Think we're going OK, Daisy looks healthy, her poo's are generally not too hard or too soft and her weight looks right to me  Smile

Yeah your dog looks in good condition, going by that chart my dog is 38 weeks and if i do somewhere inbetween that which is 4% that means he needs 800grams a day, does that sound right.

I understand that sometimes you dont need to weigh and just go by how your dog looks and check for poo's and weight, but i thought maybe best to at least get a rough guide

So you think its about right then around 800grams or so and see how he gets on with that, and just one meal a day

well this is why i don't like guidelines, see chance is probably nearly 3 times bigger then broxi and yet eats way less then that's recommending.

Personally i would never start at 4% body weight i would do 2-3% and then see what his weight does over a week or so and then adjust if he's losing or gaining weight.

One big mistake people tend to do with raw is over feed, the food looks so little in the bowl they feel bad, but this leads to huge weight gain and the runs!

theres nothing wrong with weighing his food out when just starting raw, once you've been doing it a while you will tend to do it by eye.

But yes get him weighed, i know he's still a growing pup but you don't want him piling weight on! always best IMO to go by the body condition of your own dog, they are all far too different to just go by guidelines

I make him 11 months old according to your stats thing, so ME i would have him on one meal a day as i tend to do that from 10 months old, but you can still feed twice if you want

I love raw feeding , i think its the only way ..... I neither use or believe in using guidlines on the basis that each individual dog has different needs , i have spent my entire life in gyms and learning the importance of nutrition to either lose or gain weight as needed and just like humans , dogs have individual needs depending on body type and the lifestyle they lead , use your eyes , look at your dog and work out what he/she needs for his/her own benefit.

In my experience get the outside looking right and your dogs internal health will not be far behind.

I got these scraps of the butchers yesturday when i got him chicken ( cant get my order untill the 13th ) so need to use butchers, I think its ham which is quite salty as he seemed quite dry last night and was drinking threw the night which led him to pee in the house which he hasnt done in a long time, and he was also heaving during the night twice but no sure if anything came up as hes quick to lick it up again YUCK,im not going to give him any of them scraps and keep him on chicken/chicken bone

I said i fed him because it was easier to say but after finding out what my other half put in his dinner then i can say it was her that made his dinner.

Anyhow.. yeah i poped out and told her to make his dinner then il come back get a shower then take him out,she is just after saying there she put that lamb bone in his dinner again,i put them at the side to be throwing out but i forgot to tell her i wasnt going to give them to him anymore so looks he got another lamb bone again with a small bit of meat on it. she feels quilty lol

They have been well and truely binned Smile

lamb ribs are fine once he's been on raw a while, but it's a lot richer then chicken so that will be your culprit!

Yeah more than likely i feel, i bought some natures menu freeflow mince untill i get get bulk in on the delievery date, not ideal but i feel it should be fine.

I got the chicken one,do you think i should keep him on the chicken untill i get my bulk order in or try him on the tripe next week or another.

keep him on chicken for at least a week, so yes i would keep him on chicken only, and then add tripe etc in slowly when you get your order
