Post by rooneyroo Wed Dec 18 2013, 08:47

Hi everybody im new on here and in need of some friendly help! We have a 6 and a half month old staffy cross english bull terrier called SnoopDog. We got him 2 months ago from a lady who told us alot of lies! Such as he is good with cats which was perfect for us as we have an indoor cat. Well, he is not so good with the cat. He chases him, put him in his mouth and as soon as he sees the cat he is obsessed. He is also hugely destructive, has eaten half of our coffee table aswel as other things. We did let him have run of the front room, kitchen amd hallway when we were out/at work but now cos of all this he is in a cage/crate while we are at work however my partner comes home everyday for lunch for an hour so he comes back out then. He is walked twice a day totalling about 45mimutes. Any advice with the cat and eating everything issues? Im not really a dog person, ive got 9 snakes, 2 lizards and a few scopions and like to stick to things without fur lol, but Snoop is my fiancées world and I want to help her get him sorted. Any help much appreciated!

Hi and welcome from darcy and me Smile

Re chewing is it while your out? If so have you thought of a stuffed kong to occupy him? A lot of our members swear by using Vicks on the surfaces he's chewing to deter it. As for cats I'm sorry I can't help much I've not had a cat and a dog but have a read through this. https://staffy-bull-terrier.niceboard.com/t36713-introducing-dogs-and-cats

Hello from me and Pixee too. I agree that he does need more walking time. A tired dog is a happy dog. Also leaving a kong with treats in will help relive any boredom. How about getting a stag bar, for him to chew on while you are out? They last months too, and are very good for them too. (Thats if its ok for that age? someone will help on this bit)

Hi and welcome from me and daisy  Big Grin

I do think more exercise should help, as his age 2/3 30/35 mins walks. What do you feed him?

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.

I agree with those above, you need to up the amount of exercise/walking time. A stuff Kong is a great idea and aslo stag bars are great for ridding any frustrations.

I do seal my kong with peanut better, which Pixee loves. Cant help with the cat issue sorry. When you say he chases the cat and puts him in his mouth, does he hurt the cat or just carry the cat about in a playful way?

I think its a dominance thing, he playfully bites him but the cat obviously doesnt enjoy it. He also stands on top of him and pins the cat to the floor. Im quite worried ill come home one day to a dead cat confused

This is so difficult, and I have had no experience of a dog and a cat living together. But speaking theoretically, it sounds like Snoop is trying to play with the cat; he's only a baby and will want to play with everyone and everything! As your cat is an indoor cat I'm guessing he can't escape by going outside, but is there anywhere he can get to (like a high shelf or something) where Snoop can't reach him? When you are at home, if Snoop goes to play with the cat, then just tell him No, firmly but kindly and distract him immediately with a toy or chewy.

Sorry I can't help any more, hopefully someone with more direct experience will be able to.

I think Lynda's sugestion is good. Either give the cat somewhere to escape to high up, or put a baby gate (with something on top to make it a bit higher) in a doorway so that the cat can get some peace.

What do you feed Snoop? Food often has a direct bearing on behaviour.

You can also put something on any furniture you don't want chewed - something like Bitter Apple, or even a thin smearing of Vicks Vapour Rub (if you can stand the smell!).

We've got 4 cats and when the girls were puppies they used to chase them - they were only trying to play. They didn't understand that the cats were different. The cats now eat on the kitchen worktops and they've all learned to get along. If one of the girls get too close, then the cats will smack it!! Can your cat jump onto the worktops?

Hi from me, Louis & Lexi! Ive never had a cat so I cant help with that but more walking should help, We got Lexi when she was 7 months old and she was a nightmare but more walks and training exercises at home with little treats have helped a lot. Have you tried taking him for training classes? Dogs are very playful especially puppies, that is probably what he is trying to do with the cat so make sure you play with him with toys. Smile
