Some insecure people try to big themselves up by lying. It never works and we should feel sorry for them.
I did it myself when I was in my early teens and desperately lacking in self-confidence. I learned very quickly that it didn't help at all; I knew it was fibs so didn't feel any better in myself, and the humiliation I felt when I realised that my friends knew it was fibs was worse than the original sense of lowliness.
Some people just go through this trauma later in life than I did
