Dermodex
Hi, any advice appreciated. Nala is about 23 weeks now and doing well, however she does have a bald ish patch above her eye. It has got slightly larger, she's had it for say a month or so now, hwoever when we visited the vet they said they wouldn't advise treating it unless it looked infected. It's not sore or red, nor does it seem to be bothering her, but it has got larger. I've looked it up on the net and it seems to say to leave it be if it's not bothering her. The vet did say Blue staffs seem to have more skin problems than other colours, and also said as she's a puppy her immune system is all over the shop and it should sort itself out. I contacted the breeder, who owns her mother and father, he said his dog had it and they told him in the vets that it can be passed down by the mother, however he said the mother never had it but the father did. He said he had his treated and to keep an eye on it. Any advice pls

Re: Dermodex
My first pup had a skin condition too, we had all the skin scrapes done etc. They gave me treatment for demodex but still couldn't find a trace of mites, it got progressivly worse, and we had more tests done, did a skin biopsey (spelling) where they found a trace of mites. We treated her and it didn't get better still. It wasn't bothering her so I left it a while cause the £££ where stacking up at the vets. After a few weeks she started to get her fur back. Very strange, not going to say this will happen in your case though. x

Re: Dermodex
I've been putting camrosa ointment on Hollie's little bald patch for 2 weeks now but it doesn't seem to be doing anything, the instructions say to put it on twice a day for 28 days, but i'm not sure that its doing anything at all...the vet looked at it and seems to think she's just scraped her head on something???

Re: Dermodex
The Demodex is present in all dogs, and is passed on to the pups by the mother!
Normally they're just there, and do no harm at all, but occasionally they will multiply & will cause small bald spots, normally on the head (between the ears or just above the eyes) or the tail (just below the base of the tail). These will generally clear up on their own & need no treatment.
Sometimes they will multiply even more & cause widespread baldness with irritation & red/sore skin & then it would need to be treated by a vet.
To be honest, if it isn't sore & it isn't bothering her or getting bigger, I'd leave well alone & wait for it to clear on its own.
Debbie, the Camrosa ointment often makes the condition seem a little worse at first, but then should start to clear up. Give it the full 28 days, and if it's no better give them a ring & ask for their advice.

Re: Dermodex
Caryll, will do, at least Hollie's getting used to having the ointment on everyday, nicknamed her "Tattyhead"

Re: Dermodex
Thanks for that, Nala's isn't sore nor is it bothering her but it has gotten larger since it first began. As you say it is kind of above her eye. Would you suggest I leave it unless it does get sore then? She is being spayed in a couple of weeks, maybe I'll mention it then?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Dermodex
I'd leave it alone. Usually, if it is demodex, it'll go on its own. If it does seem to get sore or the skin changes texture then let your vet have a look.
