Hello everyone, meet Bobby!
Morning everyone,
I'm Alex and my staffy is called Bobby. He is white with a grey/blue eye patch (picture in avatar)
He was born on the 4th July so he is nearing his 5 month birthday.
We have had Bobby since he was 8 1/2 weeks old.
Hes a very loving dog and absolutely loves people and loads of attention!
He's 90% toilet trained, he can sit, give you his paw, lay down, roll over and spin!
He loves his walks and although I was very nervous to begin with to let him off the lead (started this at 4 months), his recall is great!
Hes currently suffering with terrible itchiness, his neck and now front arm pits and chest are red raw I took him to the vet on Friday last week and they gave him anti biotics and a steroid injection but unfortunately it is just getting worse! I feel useless! Ive used calomine lotion but nothing is easing him. I will be taking him back to the vets today but I think he will now require skin tests as he has been flea treated regularly since we had him and is already on a natural hypo allergenic diet (has been on Orijen and now James Wellbeloved)
Just wanted to say hi!

Re: Hello everyone, meet Bobby!
Hello everyone!
I did wonder if it is from his harness or collar so his collar is always off now and his harness is only on for short periods at a time but unfortunately it is still getting worse.
Thank you for the recommendation of coconut oil. He has the vets at 12.10 today and I have just spoken with his insurance company for the first time and they have been very helpful so fingers crossed!

OK. That would be classed as a blue x blue mating. Just something to be aware of - when you mate two blues (or any dilutes) you vastly increase the risk of Colour Dilution Alopecia in the puppies. This is a nasty skin condition in which the fur falls out to various degrees and can lead to very sore skin. It can't be cured, only controlled.Bobby13 wrote:hello!

Hopefully, your pup just has an allergy to something & it can be dealt with.

oh, you have me worried now. His skin looks awful and I feel absolutely useless. He's snuggled up on my lap right now (sulking a little because I told him off for running around with clean washing I had just folded up and put in the basket!) lol. Ive just taken a picture of his skin, im embarrassed to post it but im doing all I can to resolve it and make him better.Caryll wrote:OK. That would be classed as a blue x blue mating. Re: Hello everyone, meet Bobby!
I'll be honest, that actually looks more like rubbing. A lot of whites do tend to have quite sensitive skin, and the areas of the soreness are right where a collar & harness would sit.Bobby13 wrote:oh, you have me worried now. Re: Hello everyone, meet Bobby!
He hasn't worn his collar for about 2 weeks now and his harness he only wears on his walks, all the other time he is naked lol.
He scratches all the time and I tell him now and have to physically stop him sometimes because it does it for so long, I get a rabbit foot scratch while hes still in the motion but I don't mind a few scratches if it stops him hurting himself. Off to the vet in a minute so hopefully some positive news! Thank you

Re: Hello everyone, meet Bobby!
Hello all and thank you
Well trip to the vets seemed a bit pointless I don't know.
They took some skin scrapes to see for fleas, mites etc and although the vet said there was no signs of anything she has given me treatment of 'Advocate' in case there is a parasite there even though he has been frontline'd every 4-6 weeks. She said she didn't want to go down the allergy testing route yet?
Should I push for it or wait and see?

Re: Hello everyone, meet Bobby!
I'd wait and see.
Allergy testing can be very expensive and will often not tell you much!
Can you get a fleece lined collar or harness to see if it is rubbing that's doing it? Other than that, try half a Piriton tablet, twice a day. If that works, then it's likely to be an allergy. The next step would be to find out what!
What do you feed him on?

The piriton advice could be worth trying but ensure you get the normal one not the non drowsy or you will have a hyper pooch. Poor little thing hope everything's ok soon x

re: comfortable harness
i've 2 of these for mine .. ( she weighes just under 30lb )
they're strong and comfy :-)
http://www.fourpaws.com/products/comfort-control-harnesses.htm
.. found them at 'pets-at-home' ..
( after seeing the photo ..
( thought that harness design might prevent him from scratching his neck area
( and give it more chance to heal ..

Re: Hello everyone, meet Bobby!
Personally I would push for it, my last staff was allergic to so many common things that she was practically constantly on doggy piriton, why wait and let your pup suffer if you can rule things out or possibly get to the issue and treatment quicker!

Re: Hello everyone, meet Bobby!
Welcome - Bobby is absolutely adorable.! I'm new here too but still waiting to get my first staffy. I've owned dogos for many years and we've gone through the skin conditions with basically all of them. What we've found is that food and shampoos would really cause problems with their skin.
Sticking to natural kibble that was grain free and with the best natural ingredients (we had no problems when we tried Orijen), as well as protein sources like chicken, beef, rabbit, boar and whole eggs with rice or potato did well. With the exception of our last dogo, he was allergic to chicken and egg so that was out for him.
Shampooing - we had problems with even the hypoallergenic type so baths weren't too frequent. When they did, it was with water only. The rest of the time a good brush and wipe down with a damp cloth was more than enough.
Hope your boy feels better soon and you get to the problem of the itches.

Re: Hello everyone, meet Bobby!
Hello and welcome! I have a white boy and he's always got bumps and scrapes ect on him! He's a very very weak dog skin wise! If I walk him on grass, the grass rubs his legs, he gets carpet burn on his head (he slithers around on the floor in the lounge a lot) and he rubs his tummy raw due to sliding under the bed or rolling on the floor playing with Ebony;and it seems to take him a lot longer to heal! I always have a pot of sudocream at home as he always has something up skin wise! The problems he has isn't to do with allergies as it's just his skin being easily damaged, I don't know about the colour of his parents as he's a rescue, but I do use Sudocream on him and it seems to do the trick! Depends on the wound I'd salt water it to clean, then powder the wound and then sudocream it sometimes he has random spouts of itching one spot of his body (the vets said it's nothing to worry about) so I brought "Tea Tree Spray" from Pets at Home which is anti-bacterial and is great to stop any itchiness and makes them smell nice!
He hasn't actually been itchy or had an skin injuries lately, when I had him he always used to be banged up; it might be to do with the fact he's now fed on Raw which is a lot better for your dog on a whole, for so many reasons so fingers crossed he won't need so much done to him
Maybe look into raw food and what kind of harness and collar do you have?
