To Breed or not?
Im not sure If I should have Roxy neutered or let her have one lot of pups.. I Hear two things one you should always let a bitch have one litter then get her neutered. And others get her neutered around 6mths old? Is there any benefit if I let her have one litter first? But even If I did let her have one litter it wont be until she is 2 years old.

Re: To Breed or not?
Personally jay I'd leave the breeding up to the professionals, there are no health benefits from her having a litter, there are lots of questions too,
Is she a healthy example of the breed and is the stud dog too?
Could you raise the puppys if anything should go wrong ?
Do you have all loving homes ready for all the puppys ?
Do you have the finances in place to care for the puppys, medical treatments, microchips etc. ?
I've no doubt there are many more questions to ask too have a read through this :- https://staffy-bull-terrier.niceboard.com/t29736-do-i-need-to-breed

Re: To Breed or not?
Simple answer no. No benefits and unless you know what you are doing leave it to those that do.

Let's not forget the thousands of unwanted Staffies in rescues waiting for forever homes.

Re: To Breed or not?
Leave breeding to the professionals, there are enough homebred pups by owners who shouldn't really breed!

Re: To Breed or not?
I also agree with those above, there is no benefit to her having a litter, are health checks in place etc etc. Please leave it to those who know what they are doing and are set up for any complications that may arrise.

Re: To Breed or not?
I'm not convinced tbh. But if you do it you probably wont want to post it on here "hi pups are six weeks old now and ready to go" as others who have posted this post have done.

Re: To Breed or not?
Most DEFINITELY not. There's no advantages for her health if she has a litter, more so risk of things not going right, risk of infection ect. Would you know what to do if anything went wrong? I'm guessing not so I'd leave it for the breeders. My girl was neutered before 6 months old as her owners had done it before she came into rescue and she's never had a problem. (I don't condone doing it early than six months, just giving an example of my healthy, happy girl whose never had a season or puppies)

Neither of these is right!jmk wrote: I Hear two things one you should always let a bitch have one litter then get her neutered. And others get her neutered around 6mths old?
It's an old wives' tale that it's best to let a bitch have one litter. It has no health benefits, and can even make a bitch broody for more, resulting in phantom pregnancies and an increased risk of pyometra.
But it's also not correct that they should be neutered before 6 months old. Early neutering (ie done before full maturity, before about 18 months-2 years) results in a leggier, narrower dog as the closure of the growth plates is delayed. You also can be left with a dog suffering from permanent puppy syndrome, urinary incontinence, poor developement of the genital area (resulting in urinary burn) and an increased risk of bone cancer.

Re: To Breed or not?
So wait until she is 18 months before getting her neutered ? Well I guess the vet wont do it before then anyway

Re: To Breed or not?
At least 18 months, yes. PreferablY two years.
I don't neuter at all, but I understand that a lot of people want to. As long as your dog or bitch is mentally & physically mature you'll get the all the pro's and very few con's!

Re: To Breed or not?
If you dont neuter is it not a pain when in season and all the dogs in the area are around and cant even take her out coz of the male dogs.

Re: To Breed or not?
I don't neuter either and i wouldn't neuter a bitch, my intact male has no interest in an in season bitch so not every dog will cause problems!

Re: To Breed or not?
I'd get her neutered sooner rather than later if you think you'd be tempted to breed her. We had molly done after her first season and she's a beautiful girl

Re: To Breed or not?
Hi JMK, I understand your concerns as you want the best for your pup.
I too was told (several times) and many, many years ago that every bitch should have one litter. The sentiment behind that being that the bitch would have her maternal instincts satisfied and thereafter be a happy, contented bitch whether or not spayed afterwards. I'm a bit surprised that this old wives tale is still going the rounds, but please believe me it is sentiment only. What a bitch has never had she'll never miss.
At the other end of the scale, vets these days have got it into their heads that all puppies (male or female) should be neutered at 6 months old. This, tbh, is too young - they haven't finished growing yet and the cutting off of hormones can cause the effects that Caryll has outlined above.
In all honesty, dogs of whatever sex should be allowed to grow and mature as nature intended. Then neuter if that is best for your dog and you.
Yes, seasons in a bitch can be a bit of a nuisance, but not unmanageable especially as these days you can get special nappies for them, and certainly not as much of a problem as having a pregnant bitch to look after, worry and expense at the birth, and cost of bringing up puppies until they can be found good homes for.
I would earnestly advise you to tread the middle line - don't neuter until at least after the second season, and don't breed her at all.
Hope this helps

Re: To Breed or not?
Lynda's advice above is perfect and nothing more to add , we have enough staffs in the world without adding to the problems . Simple maths says if your girl had 6 pups and all got 6 homes from staff lovers then that is 6 dogs in rescue without homes , please think about it

Am pleased you have had a think about it it is a myth that still everything thinks is true, but very few ask before they breed, and they are causing our problems in rescues
