Heartbreaking. Hate all this "first pictures" nonsense but it's the only full story.

Re: :(
So sad who would rehome a big dog like that to a flat? Especially with a young kid

Re: :(
The story tends to change, at first they said it was a rescue centre, and then a pound, where they obviously have no assessments at all. Just so sad

Another horrible outcome from what looks like a poor choice of dog ownership. Poor child and devastated family

Poor little girl, nightmare for everyone involved.
Is the French Mastiff thing a mistake though, the reports all differ ?
Asking for completely selfish reasons, Alfie is a french mastiff/staffy cross so just bracing for public reactions.
They are supposed to be placid? But i suppose being so big if they did go wrong it would be much worse than a smaller dog.

Re: :(
So many stories flying around about this, It is confirmed on the police website that the dog pictured was not the dog that attacked - well done press for causing confusion as usual....
My heart goes out to the little girl and to the poor dog if I am honest...this dog apparently had a history of problems but was allowed to go to a mum of a 4 year old who lives in a flat without any checks being done...apparently by a council run pound...they are the ones who should feel guilty... forgive me if I am wrong, I doubt we will ever hear the true side of everything that happened.
I will for one be going home and giving my kids and my dog a cuddle tonight

The council pound that let the dog go to that home without checks and knowing its history should be prosecuted!

Re: :(
Apparently it was a fairly new rescue that took in stray dogs that were rehomed for £50 if not claimed in 7 days. Very much doubt any assessments were done, scary really.

Re: :(
I read somewhere (and it would have either have the Daily Mail or the BBC website) that the mum got the dog through an internet site and I thought of "that place".
Whatever the truth of the matter, this poor little girl lost her life although her mum tried valiantly to save her, and my heart goes out to her.

Re: :(
I hate the press. Irresponsible reporting. Very misleading showing the little girl in pics with the Dogue de Bordeaux, as I automatically assumed that was the dog. I assume it was an American Bulldog, as oppose to an English Bulldog? Either way, so sad, so tragic. But just reinforces the fact that you should never trust ANY dog around young children unsupervised. I have baby gates at home to separate Jasmine from my 2 year old twins, and they are only EVER in the same room under supervision. EVER. Although it seems that the attack was completely out of the blue and unprovoked.
What is "that place", by the way?? Just curious.

Re: :(
There are so many conflicting stories going around on this and I doubt we will ever hear the truth.
I feel for the mum and its tragic that the little girl lost her life but I can't help but feel there's more too it. Dogs don't just attack unprovoked imo, they don't have human emotions they are not capable of planning and they always go by instinct, something set this dog off and we will never know what.
Its a case of a dog being let down again by humans and put in a situation that it never should have been in, in the first place.

Re: :(
It is a tragic story to lose your child and dog in the same day. Must be awful for the Mum, she tried to do a good deed by adopting the dog and this happens. Poor dog as well you don't know what happened before the rescue got it, then he gets a home and gets stabbed to death.

Re: :(
Unfortunately, and I may be way off the mark here, but some peoples reasons for getting a dog in these circumstances, isn't to rescue a dog that would otherwise face a death sentence. Its to get a dog that is cheap or even free. By the sounds of it, no checks were done and the dog was just handed over regardless of the purchaser's circumstances or reasons for wanting the dog. It is the child I feel for here. She has lost her life, in a terrible circumstances. Nothing is more tragic than that.

Desperately sad for the family and dog. It should never have been re-homed to a women in a flat with a young child - only asking for trouble.

Re: :(
Jasmine - "that place" is Gumtree. But I was misled by inaccurate reporting, and it now seems that the dog was rehomed by a local rescue centre.
Worse still, it now appears that the dog was a Staffy cross and I've already had one person "mention" it to me today.
Whatever the truth, the fact remains that no dog, not even a teacup Chihuahua, should ever be left unsupervised and under full control of an adult around children.
Poor little girl, and my heart goes out to her poor mum.

Re: :(
It wasn't confirmed as a staffy cross as far as I know. A few bulldog breeders called the Daily Mail and insisted it must have staffy in it. That makes me so angry. Looking at the picture of the dog I can't see any staffy in it but yes... rumours were started by comments people were making under the story and the breeders calling to say it must have staffy in it.Worse still, it now appears that the dog was a Staffy cross and I've already had one person "mention" it to me today.
