I don't find it cruel, he looks pretty happy and its kind of a positive picture in my eyes.

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
Ooh I don't know its upsetting to see but I suppose has to have one artificial leg as there are 2 missing. I suppose if it is happy and healthy otherwise then no.

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
miss one leg is fine but an struggle but to miss 2 IMO is cruel becasue he look happy it doesn't mean it is
Re: anybody else find this cruel?
I guess from a picture we can't tell if he's happy or coping with the loss of two legs, I'd have to see a video of him walking about etc to decide if I think its cruel or not.

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
I think it is totally unnecessary and the rubbing would annoy the dog and if it got stuck he would not be able to manouvre out of it.

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
no i don't think a dog missing 2 legs is cruel, they adapt so well and don't seem to miss the other to at all!

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
I think its better than the dog dying. Not cruel as animals adapt a lot better than us. He wont remember he used yo have 4 legs!

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
if my dog had to have 2 legs remove i would tell the vet jus put the poor thing down...
Re: anybody else find this cruel?
each to their own i wouldn't put a dog down for missing 2 legs

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
actually they can they just find their own way of doing it, theres really not much a 2 legged dog can't do that a 4 legged one can
Guest- Guest
Re: anybody else find this cruel?
i would put it down too, they adapt but the strain on their bodies will be very painful.

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
dogs with HD have a lot more strain on their joints and body and would find it much harder to walk then a healthy dog missing 2 legs, and yet we don't put them down. Doesn't wash with me

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
ive ever had a dog with it, but if i did and the vet told me he was in pain... id never keep an animal alive because i didnt want to see them go
Guest- Guest
Re: anybody else find this cruel?
every dog with HD is in pain to some degree especially if untreated which is why they go on high strength pain killers, and a lot get hip replacements, very very few get PTS because of it

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
thats on the owners and bad breeders then, and vets taking the money for the ongoing treatment that will never correct it.

Hayley are you saying you'd have a dog put to sleep if it had HD?

even the best of bred dogs can get HD and so can people.....

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
Personally I think it would be a case by case thing. If you never been around this dog then you can't really tell how he is doing or feeling. Sure they can't tell you for themselves but any person with a brain can tell if the dog is living life and enjoying /having fun or if he is better suited being put down once they observe how the dog acts and does day to day things. The only thing you can tell from this picture is that the dog is missing 2 legs and has 1 fake leg. If it was my dog and he was happy/ healthy then it would stay that way but if he lived every day with pain and agony then of course I would have to consider the 2nd option, as painful as it sounds...

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
I'm afraid I side with Steve. This poor dog might possibly have been in an accident, as the missing legs are on the same side. What pain it must have gone through. and it's quality of life must surely be affected.

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.. but as far as "pain he has gone through" ... Well I was in a MAJOR motocross accident, put on support. My family was told they have to wait a few days before any surgeries ( due to the fact i may not make it ). They were told that there was major risk with surgery and outcomes could be not what they expected. I pulled through, I was in a wheel chair for 6 months, then on to crutches and and went through a year of physical therapy. To this day I STILL have issues but push through all obstacles and don't let anything stand in my way. In fact I am in the best shape of my life, and I am 30 yrs old.
What I am getting at is I am sure glad everyone that helped me during the accident, during the surgery/after, through therapy- stuck by me and believed in me and helped me pull through .. instead of just "putting me down" ..what does not kill us makes us stronger.

if i lost both of my legs i would wan somone to put me down just my opinion
Re: anybody else find this cruel?
OMG Gnarlymilk - I'm so sorry to hear about what you have suffered and am so glad to hear that you have pulled through.
I'm not going to draw comparisons between you and a dog though

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
Yea it was a reach on the comparison but some people treat their dogs as kids/family so I went for it. Honestly I understand both sides but for me it would be a case by case thing.

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
One of our cats has 3 legs - he got run over many years ago and I wanted to have him PTS as his leg was smashed and was beyond fixing. My son insisted we had his leg amputated. When the cat came home it was terribly traumatic - he ran backwards and crashed into walls for weeks 'feeling his missing leg' the vet said. After a few weeks he started running, then climbing, then jumping. 8 years later I forget he only has 3 legs sometimes. I think it's taking each case as it comes...........

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
Personally if that was my dog and the vet said he/ she was ok I would move heaven and earth to give him / her the best quality of life under the circumstances , as said before animals are very adaptable and if they manage and don't seem distressed then thats ok by me

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
I think it depends on circumstance. Mainly, can the owner give the needed time and finances to make sure he is happy and healthy?
I dont know if any of you haave heard of a famous (ish) dog called oogy. His picture goes around facebook alot. He was put as bait for a fighting dog when he was young annd literally lost half his face (internally). He was rescued, is severely disfigured and obv a bit disabled, but happy and loving.
Im on the fence, case by case, but if we are to lament the existance based on one picture, surely we can praise it as the contrary.

Re: anybody else find this cruel?
Personally I dont thinks its cruel but guess it depends on alot of things.
I saw a youtube vid of a dog missing both its front legs! Was born that way so the dog knew no different. The owners had trained him to hop about on his remaining back legs. Although it sounds extreme, the dog looked happy and did normal things - go for walk, etc.
