Sad Names?

Post by jasmine_x Sun Oct 27 2013, 07:50

Hi all! :-) Hope everbody's well.

I'm having a bit of an issue over Romeo's name. He's fully settled in but doesn't seem to respond to his name yet? worried It's been many years since the last time I had little pups and I was sure mine were responding to their names by the second week at home. We had a talk as a family and wasn't sure if his name really flowed confused Would it be cruel to try and change his name now,as he doesn't respond at all?
Any tips on how to get him used to his name?

Thankyou all xxxxx

It took darcy quite a while to respond to her name, so much so that we thought she had a hearing problem, I think it varies from pup to pup, I know people change the name of their rescues sometimes but Im not sure if changing his name would be confusing. Smile

My husband (who reckons he's far more of a dog expert than me....) said they should have a 2-syllable name, ending on a vowel sound so they can easily hear you when you call them. Having said that, 8 weeks is very young and I don't think my two knew their names at that age. Romeo is a gorgeous boy - lovely colour

You could try saying his name then giving him a treat so he associates the sound with something nice biggrin

Agree with the advice given above, also took Rocky quite a while to get used to his name, and Romeo is still young! Lots to learn and loads of time to do it Smile Im sure he will pick it up in no time!

We adopted Rocky from a rescue centre when he was 9 months old and was already used to his name, we decided not to change it as he already had enough change to deal with in his life.

It may just take a while for him to get used to the name.

Names, like tricks and commands, take time to learn .... try using it often, with an excitable tone and giving lots of praise/treats/attention when he responds to it Smile

He will get there, Vinnie was very quick on responding to his name.
But they are all different, perhaps say it in a fun sort of way as to encourage him Big Grin

Nicos name when we got him from the rescue was gizmo but he's a year old and wasn't responding to that even then, he's started responding to nico now with lots of training, using his name before each command and with every praise / treat. We stuck by keep it similar but simple!

I agree that it's just a question of time.
We got Rod from a rescue centre when he was approximately 12 months old - he did not respond to the name they had given him there, and had gone in there as a stray so presumably had yet another name before that.
Using his new name on every interaction with him, including games and training, and rewards and he was responding to it within a couple of weeks. Smile

Sad Re: Names?

Post by gnarlymilk Tue Oct 29 2013, 16:06

I would say just stick with it, but if you have to change it I think now would be the time ( earlier the better ) while I am sure at any time u can get a dog to respond to a dif name it is likely harder the older and more established he/she gets. Jagger know his name and he is almost 13 weeks old, we did not seem to have a issue. However with our training on other things we use a clicker and treats. What you can try is say his name and as soon as he looks at you "Click" the clicker and give him a small training treat. It is important that when you do this at any time he looks at you when you call his name even if it is only for a sec u click and treat. I am a firm believer of the click/treat method. It is working VERY well for me.  Good Luck !
