false pregnacy
please help me we mated our bitch 6 weeks ago only the once, they stuck for about half an hour she almost straight away finished her season and stopped bleeding, since she has all the signs of being pregnant. I took her to the vets yesterday but he could not feel any puppies, and suggested it most probably is a phanton pregnacy, has anyone else experienced this, he also said that she could be pregnant but she is carring a small litter in her ribs?

Re: false pregnacy
I really haven't a clue about pregnacys. If its a phanton pregnancy then its very distressfull for all, but they will come out of it, but carrying a litter in her ribs I haven't a clue. Could the vet not do an ultrasound (don't even konw if they do these with dogs) and see if she is or isn't?

Re: false pregnacy
The only experience I know was a friend had a bitch which had about 4 phantom pregnancies (could never undersatand why he didn't have her done) she would burrow the sofa and make a nest, treat her toys like they where her babies but they weren't. Didn't see it myself, just heard. Sorry not been there myself only rescue. Someone will be on with more help though. I'm suprised when you went to see the vet they weren't more help. But please don't stress x

Re: false pregnacy
Yes what the vet says is spot on its very hard to determin if they are definatly in pup as they do carry them right up in the uterous (ribs) having a scan can determin the fertilized embreyo but live puppies are another thing as non viable ones will be reabsorbed.
If you have carefully monitered your girl you should see the signs of pregnacy but sometimes they hide it so well

And when she has had her puppies give her more food , dont worry if for the first few days she dont leave them much to eat thats normal, but she will need your help to sustain milk with a good healthy diet
A good idea to take her for a check up at the vets and have him/her on standbye should you need them as her due date arrives.
Good luck keep us updated

Re: false pregnacy
With Mouse's mother, other than the nipples starting to fill out and loosing the hair around them untill 1- 2 weeks before she gave birth you could hardly even tell she had any in there.

Re: false pregnacy
Have you been giving her a bit more calcium than normal? We gave our bitch cottage cheese as a supplement to her food. We also gave her puppy kibble on top of her normal raw diet as its high in protein for the baby's development.
Ooo exciting! Our girl also had an ultrasound but to be honest they are expensive and not that accurate. They can usually tell you if the dog is pregnant but not how many puppies.
Good luck, let us know how it goes

Re: false pregnacy
Oh, how cute are they? Do you have names for them? Please let us see more pics as they get bigger!
I'd wait until the pups have gone to their new homes & then have a word with the vet. You have about 6 months to make the decision, so no hurry!

Re: false pregnacy
from what i can see with her having a c section see will need a bit ov time for every thing to get back to normal which should take around 4 1/2 months

Re: false pregnacy
I will update some more photos as they get bigger, Milly is doing so well, a brilliant mum, and getting stronger every day, mind u she is well pampered. To think we might of lost her was unbarable, anyway things are great, I also have a male american bull staffie, called Ozzy, he has been amazing he can stay in the same room with Milly and the pups, he doesnt attemped to go near them. I think he misses the time with Milly, as he loves her to bits. Any ideals would he fight with a male pup if I deceiced to keep one, as the pup grew up.
